Default Tilt Lever Removal

How do I pull the tilt lever from the column without disassembling the column?

There is a clip that has to be released with a small screw driver.
It is a little tricky, but it can be done.
It snaps back on a lot easier than it releases.

Just did this on my '03. The lever had snapped off at the point where it loaded into the rectangular collar slot. A little more info for those attempting this. Mine had a pin inserted into a collar that the lever slipped into that corresponded to a slot in the lever. The slot/pin are on the cabin side (as opposed to the dashboard side) and the pin is held in by a piece of spring metal that is mounted to the collar frame. After fiddling with separating the spring metal enough to get the pin removed far enough to slide the lever arm out, the spring metal snapped off! Bummer. After dropping the pin into the bottom of the plastic steering housing trim several times, I finally got it reinserted and added a couple of drops of expoxy to keep it from sliding out on it's own.

By the way, replacement levers are no longer carried by Chevrolet as they have been discontinued. Chevrolet did order a replacement for me from a "vintage" dealer warehouse. The price went from $10 Chevy cost to $15, plus $15 shipping from the vintage shop.

A new handle was delivered today. When removing the stub of the old one, I bent back the clip on the right. It apparently holds in place a small rivet, which fits into a grove on the handle shaft that goes into the recess. Like many others I've spoken with experienced, the rivet popped out, landing somewhere in the steering column cover. The stub then came out easily. I pushed in the new handle, it seems snug. I may epoxy it if it comes loose. FYI..I got a NOS handle from:
www.smcperformance.com
www.smcautoparts.com

$24!

Thx!
