Default Fuel Filter Parts

Found the problem with the gas smell in my 98 coupe, it was the leaking fuel filter (these forums are great!)

Problem is the only filter for my car in town was a Wix. It doesn't have the opening on the outlet side where I stuck my screwdriver in to loosen the retaining clips, so I think it would be a bear to change myself in the future. It also doesn't have the bracket, probably no biggie to change over, but I think I'll order an AC Delco Monday.

So, are the parts that came off when I took the old filter out just part of the old filter or do I need to order an o-ring and the bushings that slipped over the fuel line? (if so, in what order? they popped out when I took the filter out, so I don't know which way they should go back in).

It looks like the Wix filter may have the o-ring etc already in it, but I can't tell and none of the parts guys seem to know.

Also, the retaining clip on the fuel line on the outlet side is still on the fuel line, should that be replaced and will a new one come with the AC Delco filter or ordered separately (the Wix filter didn't have a new one with it, and again the parts guy doesn't know).

PS. I wanted to attach a picture, but on Posting Rules says You May Not Post Attachments, and don't see any way to do it like I've done on other forums. What do I need to do?

I may have a fix for another problem I found while changing the filter and a picture may be helpful (I'll post on another thread, it's not fuel filter related, but I won't know til I can crank the car back up.)

Well, that's better than finding yourself setting in a pond of raw fuel on the pre-grid like I did last week.

No, the AC filter won't come with new clips. You can get replacement clips at NAPA (But they don't look as strong as the stockers) Also GM doesn't sell the stockers so if anybody knows where to get them let me know.

The two (Actually one outlet and one return) lines that are on the one end of the filter are two different sizes so you can't get them mixed up.

Good luck.

He's got a '98. The '98s don't have a fuel filter with a 3rd (return) line. There are only two.

I looked at Wixs' website to check their part number for your '98 and they do not list a fuel filter. Makes me wonder what filter you WERE sold since Wix doesn't list one for you.

Thanks guys, I'll take the Wix back, looks like it's close but would rather just have the original.

I'm 90% sure the orings etc will come with the new filter (inside the filter itself). It's just a bear to get off. took me close to an hour to get off without taking off the muffler pipe. Shouldn't be too hard to get back on, though.

How can I post pictures, for future freference?

Get the Gm part.It will last longer. The filter will come complete, just plug in the hoses and go.Not an easy project, but it will help to unbolt the exhaust flange to get some more room.Be gentle with the gasket on the flange.
