03 clunk noise pls help

03 clunk noise pls help
I have an 03 A4 vert. with about 26K miles. I have a clunk noise that is slightly different then what I've read here. Mine makes a clunk when slowing to a stop or putting the car into reverse or drive. Steering has no effect either way. Does anyone with a C5 have this problem? It seems to be anytime you let up or apply gas at slow speed or no speed probably because you can't hear it at high speed.
It does not go away when the car warms up- if anything it is more noticable. Could it be u-joints? differential?
