Default Fuel gage - different problem

Since a few weeks, I have a different kind of fuel gage problem.
Whenever I fill up, the fuel gage shows little over 1/2 tank but after 15 minutes of driving, the gage slowly moves up and shows full.
Now if I shut off the car and restart again, the fuel gage instantly shows full but if I let the car sit for more than an hour, it starts out with 1/2 tank again.
I don't have the issue where the gage instantly drops to zero as many other forum members have reported.

What do you think it could be? No fuel related error messages at all.
My car is a '99 MN6 with 46.000 miles.

Thanks,

Roger

Don't have the answer for you, but my '97 has done that for quite some time. It only does it once or twice after fill up. I like to think that is just the way it is supposed to be!

Having delt with fuel problems myself I have a theory on this one. If it only did it when you fill up I would say one of your floats are sticking. Since it does it after the car has been sitting a while I think there might be some corrosion on your fuel level curcuit. The gauge reads fuel level based on electrical resistance corrosion on this curcuit could change the voltage to give you inacurate readings but still be within thenormal voltage range so it would not trip a code. Just a thought.

Thanks. Anybody know how the fuel sensors work?

Thanks for the link.
After reading that, I feel there is not much I can do myself.
Dealer time I guess :(
