I recently purchased a 2003 C5 and when I fill the tank all the way my garage reeks of gas. There's no noticable fuel leaking on the garage floor and once I've driven 20 miles or so, no more stink. Can someone give me an idea of where to start looking. Also, can someone recommend a good vette mechanic in the Phoenix, AZ. area?
I have the same problem. Every time I fill the tank up all the way, my garage smells like gas a lot. I've been only filling my tank half way recently to avoid the smell. Thanks for posting.
I've noticed an occasional fuel smell inside right after filling the tanks. doesn't always happen and if its done the smell is gone by the time I get home.
ever get the P0442 code? I think that's the one. I used to get that after most fuelups if I didn't twist the cap a few full turns to really seal it. (now that code is tuned out...thanks Ed!) if you look under the fuel cap you'll see a rubber O-Ring which seals the cap on the tank. that code is "evaporative emissions system small leak" which was being triggered by pressure in the fuel tank leaking around the fuel cap. the O-ring on mine is old, worn, and cracked. I'm pretty sure that is the cause of the problem. if I twist the cap a couple of times around the problem went away.
check your seals, try really tightening the cap down to see if that makes a difference. if the seal is bad replace the cap.
The usual causes of smelling gas fumes is either the fuel filter is leaking or the crossover tube is having problems. Yes, sometimes the gas cap as mentioned too, but not as often as one of these others. One person actually had a leak at the pump access. You need to get under it and look for evidence of the leak. If you can smell it, its leaking.
I had the exact same problem, my passenger side fuel tank cracked on the top and was spraying out fuel when the system would pressurize and I had a full tank. I would get it fixed or checked out IMMEDIATELY!
