Default What is 'keying' a crank?

I've seen this mentioned in some threads on superchargers. Just curious what it is exactly. Thanks.

A keyway (slot) is cut into the crankshaft and a matching keyway is cut into it's mating component (can be a sprocket, etc.). A key, often just a small square or rectangular bar, is inserted into the keyway in the shaft and the mating component is assembled onto the shaft, sliding the matching keyway over the protruding part of the key. This rotationally locks the two components together. In otherwords, when torque is applied to the shaft, it's transferred to the mating component, causing it to turn synchronously. The key prevents slippage between the two components, which in power transfer can be detrimental or even disastrous, especially when critical timing is required.

One way is by drilling a hole into the crank, & the balancer while still on the vehicle.........
The keyway & key, need not be rectangular.......you just need a STOP for the balancer so it will not SLIP past the original timing location.
