Question
A little tip, if you do cut the holes cover the holes with some kind of screen to keep out some of the junk.
I've got a Blackwing on my car. It looks good, has a washable filter but it wont perform any better than a stock airbox with holes cut in it. Add a washable filter (like the k&n or the Cool blue, or some of the others and you have achieved the same airflow as some of the $300 - $400 aftermarket filters.
But it doesn't look as cool
Drilling holes could just be adding more holes with no benefit.
I still give the GM engineers a little credit for designing a system that is not going to be unduely restricted.
Same with the stock air filter. There is a trade off to make them less restrictive. The less restrictive the filter, the more dirt gets into your engine. Plus, some studies have shown that aftermarket filters may start out less restrictive, but they get dirty quicker, pass more dirt, and eventually become more restrictive. When paper filters get dirty, you just throw them away, and do not have to mess with cleaning them. A lot to be said for staying with the stock paper air filter.
One other note... some people do not like Fram oil filters, but I like the air filters. I just bought a Fram air filter for my Impala, and it was identical to the ACDelco filter that came on the car. I compared the Fram filter to a WIX air filter (since I like WIX oil filters), and it also looked like they were made by the same manufacturer, right down to the color of the orange rubber trim.
One other odd thing was that the WIX filter for the Impala cost $22, while the Fram filter for the Impala and the Z06 were both $12.
crazy!
