I have a 1999 corvette with a balancer that is wobbling a little. I have bought a new one to replace it. My question is how hard is it to do. I see I need to remove the belts and remove the bolts that hold it on. Will the balancer come off without moving the rack and pinion, if not how hard is it to either loosen it, or move it out of the way to get the balancer off. Any pictures or diagrams/Instructions would be a great help.
If it's only wobbling slightly, I'd monitor it for a while to see if it worsens. I've heard that even new OEM replacements can sometimes appear to "wobble" slightly. Mine Wobbles a tiny bit and has for 20k miles. Never seems to get any worse.
The worst part is getting that bolt off and the new one back in. You have to hold the motor from spinning, either with the GM tool (replaces the starter, which means drop the exhaust and starter as well) or if its an auto, I rigged a bracket that mounted two of the flex plate bolts to an aluminum bar and it held against the trans case. Either way, its a booger to get at. The balancer comes off with a puller pretty easy, then you have to get the new one on (I would suggest reading up on how to pin the crank as well, it keeps the new one from spinning).

There is a tool at either Jegs or Summit that fits into the damper and rests against the frame, it's about $35 or you can make one if you have a welder. Someone had a diagram on the Forum with dimensions if you want to make one, it allows the main damper bolt to be turned while holding the damper and crankshaft stationary.
