to make a long story short i was driving my car in the street yesterday beating on it a lil but nothing crazy. then all of a sudden i felt the car dancing from the back making a funny noise drove it normal home it felt like the rear end went. like the posi unit messed up. got the car home jacked it up everything looks normal. by mistake i put the car in 1st let the clutch out no tire movement the engine didn't cut off then i noticed the e brake was up lower the brake wheels moved both same rotation. 2nd thing i went to tighten the wheels before lowering the car with the car in 1st and reverse the both wheels spin which i don't think it's normal.
thanks
If the engine is off and you're in first gear and with the wheels off the ground you can easily turn them, you've got major problems. I'm thinking the main shaft has sheared and if so, hope your checkbook is ready for it.
I can't turn them easy but from my experience with a 5 or 6 speed car the wheels only turn if the engine turn. If the main shaft is broken will the car drive. the car right now run and drives find it feels like the posi unit is shot the car just doesn't feel the same in the rear no noise just a very slight vibration at low speeds with the car in neutral.
Well, normally if the shaft had sheared, it wouldn't move under the power of the engine. So you are able to drive it now but you feel vibs. hmmm....try doing some figure "8's" in a parking lot and see what happens. I would also suggest getting the rears off the ground and jackstands, front wheels blocked of course and have someone start it up while you're under there listening carefully. Past that, drain the rear end and look for metal in the fluid.
It kind of sounds like you sheared a stub axle, but I've been told that the posi unit will not lock up and drive the other wheel in that case because it needs some resistance on the other side to work with. Hence your car wouldn't be driveable in that case. But I wonder if somehow you fugged it up in such a way that it was binding up just enough with the weight of the car on the wheels to lock up the posi unit and drive the other wheel.
"UPDATE" drove the car while on the jack stands no noise. the wheels do spin when on the jack stands but when i put the car on the floor no good the engine wants to turn. gonna wait till a buddy comes over so we could try to spin both tires at the same time in the same direction i wouldn't let me spin just one with the other on the ground in gear or neutral
after several conversations we suspect the limited slip is the cause going to change the fluid out tomorrow add the additive and hope for the best if not rear end change.
