Trying to find a fix for a leaky butt on my 04 coupe. My leak is on the right side unlike most others. I have replaced the seal twice already. When I got the car, it appeared that it had been leaking for some time. I think it may have a reman cv axle but not sure. Upon inspection , the end of the axle looks to be good condition with no grooves or burrs. I fitted the seal on the end of the axle and it didn't feel very tight but it did form a seal. I measured the axle at 1.677". Went to NAPA where they had a reman axle and it measured slightly smaller at 1.675. I am a loss on what to check next, appreciate any help
You need a special tool to insert the axle back into the diff. I had my redone 5 times and it always leaked until the techs admitted they would try what chevy recommends and use the pilot tool. A few THOUSAND dollars later my leak was fixed.
Look at a service manual and they describe what is needed. If you bypass this step the seals get tore up on install.
The silver lining for all the shops that tried to fix mine is they made more and more money over the two years it took to find someone that can read and follow directions. I had both shafts replaced and was about to have the entire rear end replaced (even thought about selling the car) until one day I found a tech that could read.
