On the way home from the shop after a new transmission install my motor decided to crap out on me. Just before I got it home it started making a ticking noise at about 2500 rpm. I got it home and checked the oil and it was 3 quarts low. I took the oil filter off and cut it in half to reveal lotz of shiny metal flakes. None of which were attracted to a magnet. The oil has always been clean and clear, and have never had any previous problems with the motor. Any ideas on what it could be before I tear into the motor? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, running the motor at half the oil capacity..... What type of rockers do you have?

Yea, since I had just changed the oil prior to taking it to the shop I did not think to check it before I left. Supposedly springs are comp 918's on stock rockers is what they told me when I purchased the heads. The heads are cnc ls6 heads.

This car has been raced but has never been starved for oil and the oil was changed regularly even before the due date. So it has been taken care of.
So the car leaked out 3 quarts of oil sitting at the shop? Can you isolate the tapping to a side? If so, pull the valve cover and investigate. If you are running 918's with stock rockers, I can't imagine they liked being starved for oil.

Thats what I cant figure out. Here is the story on what happened.
I took the car to a reputable Corvette shop here in Tulsa to put a new auto transmission in it bc I had lost 3rd & 4th gear. The car ran better than perfect previous to this. I took the car in and 6 weeks later I got it back. Not happy at all. Since it had set there that long and we were planning to take it to a car show the next day I had discussed with the mechanic if he would go ahead and change the oil. (Im **** about changing the oil). He said he would but who knows. I get the car almost home when it starts the clicking noise. Thats when I checked the oil and pulled the filter etc. On top of this my car is covered in overspray.
It sounds like it is comming from the passenger side. I already pulled the valve covers off. Everything still looks good. It sounds like it is deeper down in the block. But I can figure what the metal flakes would be. They must be aluminum since they failed the magnet test.
