Default Help! Hyperflash Problem

No replies from C5 General, maybe someone here can help...

Hey Guys,

Interesting problem. My 1999 Coupe seems to have developed an issue where the right turn signal flashes very rapidly (hyperflash). No burned out bulbs, and everything seems fine upon inspection. I've heard of this problem with LED's but my lights are completely stock. The left turn signal remains fine, and interestingly, when the hazard switch is used, both sides flash at the correct rate. I thought it may be a malfunction with the hazard switch, but if the switch is bad, is it possible for the problem to be isolated to just one side? Also, this happened just hours after a HUGE rain storm (I don't believe in coincidences).

Any thoughts?

Hazard switch/flasher. Replace or try the DIY bypass in the Ultimate DIY thread.

Did you try searching for hyperflash? One reason no response is because this same problem is posted about once a week.

Hyperflash indicates an open circuit. Since you say it isn't a bulb it must be either a broken wire or a dis connected plug. Do a volt check at the socket, left and right sides should read the same when activated. needle (on volt meter) should probably bounce wetween 0 and 12 volts. It could also be a bad flasher module (plug in). Go from corner to corner, see if all the bulbs flash when activated. If one doesn't, that the culprit circuit. I all four corners flash, it's most likely the flasher.
Good luck.

Peter, thanks for your reply. Of course I tried searching, but I didn't find a problem similar to mine - mine is ISOLATED to the right side. Also, the rain right before this occurring made me suspicious.

Phanni, thanks for the suggestion. Perhaps there's a short somewhere, I'll check things out with the meter tomorrow.

I had similar issue. I removed the socket from it's holder, turned on the blinker, and wiggled the bulb - VOILA! The bulb was loose in the holder.

Problem Solved!

I tested each corner with a meter as suggested and found I was only getting intermittent voltage spikes in the right-front turn signal. Might have been similar to your problem Tim, because after a little electrical contact cleaner all is well.

Thanks for everyone's help!

This may sound elementary but how do you get to the bulbs in the front turn signals? My right side bulb is out and is resulting in hyperflash when I turn the signal on.

Thanks

Get under the front bumper and remove the lower close-out pannel. Now you're going to hear 2 or 3 other ways to do it.

Default 99 hardtop turn signal

I have the same problem it is after a heavy rain my windshield has a leak I am told it is a double sided adheasive on the molding that is not holding. I have not had time o get it repaired however I did try to find a some sign of corrosion or something to cause this. I know this is no solution but I have been experiencing the same frustration.

Your car is aluminum and SMC, not going to corrode.

THe housings on the front turn signals are known for melting becasue of the heat of the bulb. When the housing melts, rain can get in and corrode the bulb socket which can short out and fry the bulb and burn the wiring.
