I had the same problem with my 98. I put two cans of seafoam through the tank with two different tanks of gas. Use Chevron with Techron exclusively...gauge has no more issues.
My gas guage was acting up when I still had warranty, took it to the stealership, they added some Techron, solved the problem, it happens every once in a while and I just add another can from time to time - seems to cure it...
Gauge died last Wed. I dumped a large and small bottle of Techron in then cleared the codes. Today I had the car out for about 80 miles and the gauge seems to be working. We don't have Chevrons around here but it appears that a few Texacos carry premium with Techron in it. I am most thankful for this forum and the distilled wisdom of other users.
Any other suggestions for fuel? Shell? BP? Or just keep feeding it Techron every few tankfuls?
I need to start a thread on this forum that starts out... "You are not using Techron?? WTF!!?" The problem is from sulfer deposits in gasoline accumulating on the contacts of the sending units (2 of them)... The neglect of not using Techron over a long period of time will result in false readings on the fuel gauge,, especially when there is less than 1/4 of a tank. Techron dissolves these deposits up to a certain point.. If you let the problem go it will get worse, until there is complete irreverseable damage to the sending units (caked on deposits).. At this point the gas tanks will have to be removed and the sending units in both tanks will have to be replaced... $$$$$ Labor intensive job$$$$. I use a bottle of Techron concentrate every 1000 miles as preventive maintanence... Its on sale every so often.. Thats when I stock up.. I'm not trying to promote Techron, as there are many other products out there on the market, however Techron is the most effective product for this paticular issue.. There are several gas stations such as Chevron and Texaco who already have the additive in the gas, and they advertise it at the pump.. If these stations are not in your area, you can find a bottle at any automotive supply.. Pep Boys,Auto Zone,O Rieleys etc...
