I was wondering which of you use the autotap program. Are you able to connect it to your laptop and then hook all that up to your car at the same time ? I wanna be able to run a program that monitors my car with the laptop inside. Is this the product I am looking for ?
Autotap will monitor basic parameters like RPM, MPH, and the other OBD-II mandated emissions-related criteria. I'm not sure what logging capabilities it has, or if the connector interferes with the pedals, but they seem to be great outfit and I'm sure they'd be willing to answer your questions.
This is what you're looking for :D ...it is a crucial diagnostic/tuning for me. I have yet to ask somthing of it that it couldn't do....aside from altering the programming itself. LOL It's really a question of what do you wanna monitor and when :D
You have only one other option that I am aware of for the money and that is the Ease system. I've not seen any yet but have heard it functions as good as AutoTap.
Yes ATAP will meet those needs. You can hook it up and drive around with it logging numerous parameters without any problems. Sometimes it will lose a connection while you are recording. but overall I found it very helpful.
I recently borrowed a friends Autotap. One problem I have with the unit is the extremely slow sampling rate when writing a data file. I've cranked up the baud rate and minimized the parameters to be acquired, but it still only logs 1-2 samples / second. This is WAY too slow at higher RPM's.
Highlight the particular parameter, click on setup button at bottom right of screen and select configure item. If you choose fast here, you will record every signal sent from the vehicles PCM, medium records every fifth and slow records every 10th.
Just remember that the more parameters you select to monitor/log, the less samples per second you will get. So only log what you need. I believe Autotap does 25 samples per second, so if you are monitoring 5 different parameters, you are only going to get 5 traces per second. If you are only monitoring 3 parameters, you will get around 8 traces per second.
Thanks. Even 25 is too slow at 6000 rpm. Certainly the cars ecu is faster than that. Is it an OBDII limitation or Autotap limitation.

The Class 2 bus uses VPW (variable pulse-width modulation) at approximately 10Kbps - approximate because VPW means variable baud rate. Most people say that the bus isn't capable of more than 12-15 frames/second; I've seen 18, but you really can't get higher than that.
i have used both Atap and now using ScanEase. i like the scan ease better since it autoconnects to the car if connection lost, sampling rate 'seems' to be much better, less problems and gliches.
I want a program to monitor my engine also. I know with AutoTap you have to import into an Excel Spreadsheet (one extra step). With Ease PC you can see everything on screen. Before I buy one of the two I am just wondering why everybody goes with the AutoTap? Is it better or just people don't know about Ease yet?
I got an ease scanner last week; I'm not terribly happy with the UI, and they seem to be overly concerned with software security, a strange notion considering that the app is useless without the hardware interface. This is causing me headaches as my laptop doesn't have a floppy drive, and the installer needs a "key disk" to install. I have a problem with a $300+ software package that takes eight hours of my time to get working.
Help files are lacking, and support for the Corvette is sketchy; I'd say only about half of the parameters that they list on their website under the GM OBD-2 enhanced tool are supported by the Vette, something that isn't immediately obvious as isn't documented on their site.
I don't have an AutoTap, but I've conversed with a few of the guys there regading misc. OBD II questions and they've been incredibly polite and responsive.
