Default My Next Mod... Knowledge

Well I am very happy so far with my Red 2001 Z06. (At a little under $18K and 50K miles I feel I got a hell of a deal)

It does need a few fluid changes and other maintenance items however. I would also like to add small mods such as headers/x-pipe down the road. After getting a few quotes on labor I think its time to invest in a jack, jackstands, and a few new tools. No one in my family was ever much of a wrench turner, and I don't have a natural instinct towards it. Even after reading a lot of threads in the tech section, I realized I'm going to have to jump into it to really learn everything. So step one is getting together some essential tools and a quality set of jackstands. After that I think I will start tackling some of the maintenance jobs with things like oil changes, coolant changes, etc. coming first.

One question I did have, is there a thread anywhere on what maintenance jobs and mods can be done on ramps/jackstands and what jobs absolutely need to be done with a lift?

Thanks for any advice on that question, and my journey in general.

Keep reading this forum and also read all the "sticky notes" at the top of the pages. There's a ton of knowledge and experience written there by alot of members.

I do all my maint. with a pair of Rhino ramps and an alum. floor jack. I've got jack stands that I've never used on my C5, but of course, I've never needed to either. I've had great luck with my '98, but I still have the 3 vol. set of GM Services manuals to study anyway, and I'm registered on all the good vette website/forums like this one to see what issues other have had with their cars. C5's are very reliable cars, but like anything else on the roads these days, there are a few lemons too. The more you mod and mess with your C5, the more potential problems you will have. You'll see it discussed everyday here!
Good luck......

Just start searching different jobs and you'll figure out which ones you want to tackle first. Lift your car safely and ask questions if you don't understand lots of great info here.
drive safe and enjoy your vette

where did you get your vette? seems like a great price.

advice frrom a retired mechanic like said above and by all means buy the factory service manuals not only help you repair but tell you how they work a most valuable piece for those seeking to self repair a close second of course is the forum info here is canot be bought at any price but beware info here is 95% accurate you bear responsability to ignore the 5% b.s. don't be afraid to ask but include as much info as possible including youe exp and ability's good luck

I have done all the work to my '99 since buying it 3 years ago, on jackstands and ramps in my garage. So far I have swapped the cam twice, swapped heads, intake, headers, cat-back exhaust, clutch and rear differential. Sure it would be nice to have a lift, but it can all be done without if you work carefully and have patience.

One of the first things I did was change the fluid in my 6-speed. Using the synthetic fluid from the GM Dealer made a big difference in the effort to shift gears.

Good luck with your car. Sounds like you got a smoking deal.
