I read a bunch of old posts and there was more back and forth then a political ad campaign so...
I am looking for difinitive information about throwout bearing noise.
I have the rattle at casual launch which I understand is normal.
Sitting at a stop if I release the clutch in neutral I have a rattle, when I rev the motor the rattle kicks up. Depress the clutch and it goes away and clean as a whistle.
I have read posts saying this is normal... this is a transmission noise not a throwout bearing noise, pilot bearing noise, warped plates... etc
What is it? Should I worry about it?
Best practice to leave the clutch in and rest in 1st gear or let the clutch out and set the shifter in neutral at lights?
I have been leaving it in neutral but the rattle is embarrassing so I have started to keep the clutch in with it in gear. I was told as long as the clutch isn't partially engaged either way is fine. AKA clutch pressed all the way in, or let all the way out with the foot not touching it.
Car had a clutch done at 40k at a dealership and it has 54k on it now. I'll pull the paperwork to see if they did the TO bearing but I thought it came in the kit.
So I'm guessing because of the response that this noise shouldn't be there?
Slight issue with trying to get it warrantied... it was the previous owner (not sure if that matters) and the work was done April 23-25th of 2007.
The Sheet says "repairs are warrantied for 12 months or 12k miles, whichever occurs first.
Here is what the order says: "Customer states that the vehicle will not engage any gear"
Replace clutch, flywheel and slave cylinder on vehicle. Clutch fingers collapsed and damaged slave cylinder.
It says something about the differential cover also but it is gibberish and doesn't make sense... this is what it says: "77 Customer had towed to dealership 913WGMPP F2005 cover and/or gasket, differential rear differential left replace 913WGMPP"
Then it looks like it has 2 seals, F-Stud, Gear Lube, and ADDT.
I was thinking of having the engine, trans, and differential replaced but it looks like all that was done just 14k miles ago. Probably doesn't need it.
I've also read that the TO bearing isn't reason enough to do the work and to wait until I need a clutch... sounds like I will be living with the neutral clutch out rattle .
When the TO bearing is going bad, it will make a noise when the clutch is depressed, not when it's released. When I had my Stang, it was starting to go bad, and it made a noise when I pushed in the clutch.
It possibly could still be the TO bearing -it could rattle if it is loose on the clutch fork or has some wear (but what you are describing are not the typical "bad TO bearing symptoms"). There are quite a few other possibilities. I'm sure some others can give you a few pointers as well

My Dad tells me the TO bearing should be disengaged when the clutch is out. But I have read that in our transmissions the TO bearing is constantly touching and spinning... and it really feels like that is the case where it is lightly being forced to spin thus causing the noise. But it is supposedly normal.
Of coarse what I just typed is my description of what I think is happening... and I have no clue how transmissions in cars work (motorcycle guy... our clutches are very easy ).
From my understanding the TO bearing is more like a piston that spins. If it is what I think it is I can see why this noise is being made... I just wish it wasn't.
