Default High Speed Vibration experience

Just wanted to post up my experience with a vibration that I was having over 80mph. Long story short, I balanced the wheels and replaced a bent wheel....the vibration was still there. Noticed there was uneven wear on the tire that was on the bent rim, so I replaced the shocks (car has 75k miles)....vibration still there. Got the car up in the air, I was able to wiggle the rear wheels back and forth, so I replaced the tie rods...BINGO! No more vibration. So for those who have a vibration and can't figure it out, check the tie rods first!

I have the same thing in my Z06. It happens exactly at 80mph. It shakes like it's coming apart. Good find. What did you end up replacing them with?

That's what my car felt like, it's not just a vibration in the steering wheel, but the whole car. The tie rods were about $80 each from the dealership. Not a hard job, just make sure to get an alignment afterwards. I replaced the shocks with Bilstein Sports.

So it was just the back ones? Yeah my whole car shakes. That's what has baffled me, if it was just the sterring wheel it would have been easier to diagnose.

Yes, just the tie rods in the back. To check them jack up the car and try to wiggle the wheel back and forth with your hands at 9 and 3. If it moves at all, they are worn. With the new tie rods, it's rock solid, no movement.

This just saved me a bunch of money!! I was about to go crazy trying to figure out what was causing the vibration. I can move my passenger side back wheel.

Thanks!!

I hope you get it sorted out! It took me weeks to figure out that the vibration was coming from the tie rods.

Great find on the source of the vibration. Moving this over to C5 Tech.

is it like a pulse through the whole car? Mine has this pulse that starts around 75 and gets worse with speed.

That is it. It was my right rear tie rod. Swapped them for the Baer tie rod ends and it fixed the issue. Had to have it aligned of course.

Just bought a 03 Z06 and drove it 800 miles to get it home. Has this same 80+ mph vibration - sure enough thanks to you, I jacked it up and it has some movement on both rear wheels.

Thanks for the share of info!
