I have a 2000 C5 with over 118,000 miles. Been my daily driver since I brought her home. I noticed this week when I had the radio down that when I would go WOT when the RPMs reached 4500+ the engine made a metallic, high-pitched whine. Under 4500 RPMs it does not make this sound. I first noticed it driving around so when I got home I tried to reproduce it in the garage to get some more info and sure enough, run the engine up and like clockwork, reach 4500 RPMs and the whine kicks in.
I do have to mention that when I noticed this that the car had recently told me that my oil level was low. Since I did this check I have added some oil (car gets an oil change on Saturday) so I'm wondering if the oil level being low could have been the cause of this noise or is it something else.
Any ideas on what it could be? My knowledge and mechanical experience with engines is not very much for diagnosing problems like this.
