Default help please clear overspray on wheels.

I just had my car painted and the wheels were covered and taped, but some how they got clear over spray on them maybe from the back side. Does anyone know how to get it off the easiest and safeest way. They are the brand new c6 deepdish chrome wheels for a c5? Thanks for your help.

I'd use clay or rubbing compound as that is the safest method.

If its true chrome and not polished, some guys use paint thinner and then wash it off, some guys use 000 steel wool, if the wheels dont have clear coat some guys use acetone, paint thinner, carb cleaner etc and then wash off carefully without getting on the body of your car.

If it were my car, I'd use Clay first then rubbing compound. Good Luck.

Your 97 wheels are clear coated. I agree that Clay with LOTS of lubricant is the best method to get overspray off. Might be a difficult time getting the clay into the smaller areas but a mildly abrasive polish like Zaino ZPC Fusion could help.

Clay bar will get it off.

I would have the place that painted your car get it off...they put it there.

I wouldn't. They will not take the care necesary to protect YOUR wheels.
Use a compound of WD-40 and white polishing compound from Turtle Wax or Dupont.
The WD-40 will keep the compound from hardening and drying out as you buff, and the WD-40 will attack the new overspray

Although I agree that the place that put it on should get it off, I don't like taking my cars somewhere to have them worked on. Too often they mess something up. In this case they already did and I wouldn't want to take it back

Try the clay bar. It has worked for me a number of times.

I'd try the clay bar and detailing spray first and if that does not work try the polishing compound and be careful not to rub it on the chrome too hard.

To me rubbing compound would be a no, no.

Default thank you for all the help.

Thanks everyone for all the help. I tried using the clay and different solvants and they didnt seem to work. I ended up using rubbing compound and it worked great with no scratches in the wheels. I dont think they have clear on them they are aftermarket deep dish z06 chrome wheels. I would have had the guy that painted it remove it off the wheels except it was one of my buddys who painted it in my garage for only 900 so i cant complain at all for that price. That price was with materials labor and bodywork. Thanks again for the help.

Clay Bar will get it!

When I first bought my car, I noticed some yellow paint on the edge of a gill opening - I think previous owner hit one of the ballasts at the gas station. Tried a mild rubbing compound but it didn't seem to be removing it and I was worried about the clear coat on the car. I then used a clay bar from Zaino and it took it right off. Since then, I have used the clay bar on other vehicles that got some overspray of paint on them from somewhere - who knows.

It does a great job and doesn't damage the original finish.
