:seeya So if you haven't heard already,I fried the transmission yesterday at Moroso Motorsports Park here in Palm beach ,Florida. With the cold front coming in and some low temps I thought it would be a great opportunity to get some low e.ts. for a baseline before I went forward with the ARE heads and cam install..Seemed like a good idea at the time....NOT!!:nono:
After only 2 runs in a 4 hour time period and a very poorly prepared track and a zoo fill of people my best run was a sloppy 12.64@110 and a miserable 2.44 60'...absolutely dismal evening! So I head home after the track was suspended AGAIN for 1 1/2 hours and I go home(about 20 miles) .Not a bad trip at all! After going thru the last toll, I enter the fast lane at about 80 mph and the car just won't upshift to 3rd...just revs no pull.WTF....
Anyway to make a long story short, I have the car towed to my local trans specialist and I need to rebuild this Transmission....Oh boy! Now the fella says how do you want me to rebuild this.Do you want a replacement GM trans or do you want a really great custom built trans that will take a beating?
I say I want a bullet proof trans and I don't want to have this conversation again...ever! So....Any suggestions to what components I need to make this bullet proof? I'm hearing Kevlar bands and redline clutch packs, etc..............

Re: I need a bulletproof A4 transmission!! (vstella)
Dude,
I'm sorry to hear that! Been there done it myself with same symptons as you. This happened to me last summer only one hour after getting my car back with new found power from heads and cam. I also went with Level IV FLP TRanny out of Naperville, Il and have about 5k miles on her with no problem so far. If your tranny guy is a specialist and knows how to bullet proof the A4 tranny then let him do it! Otherwise, may want to consider going with someone like FLP who specializes in this vette tranny and has many satisfied customers from chicago, to east coast to Austria (See Austrian Vette on the forum who has been spraying the sheet out of his FLP Tranny on the laughing Gas wihtout any problems!) Call Chuck Johnson at FLP as he is the tranny guy and see what he can do for you unless your 100% confident with your local guy! Chuck builds this tranny to shift thru vacum lines without depending on pcm. She shift nice and hard and seems strong so far!
Well, I guess that's one thing the engineers haven't figured out yet. My '89 is on it's 3rd transmission. Granted the car has 150,000 miles on it, but the engine has never been apart.
I hear Art Carr makes a pretty reliable transmission.
Re: I need a bulletproof A4 transmission!! (vstella)
I´ve run 10.34 on my C5 and did some long high speed runs.
The FLP tranny works fine since two seasons now and the price is right.
I really like the Vaccum shift module as my PCM always was too slow to
let the tranny shift right when spraying in first.
The FLP tranny is very streetable, no bad effects, and very fast shifting on the track.
For me Chuck is the man.

Oh, and I would ask the question on http://www.ls1.com and http://www.ls1tech.com Between theose 2 sites, people have done 100X more trans rebuilds than here. They will know what will be good for a heads/cam car.

You don't really need to do that. I did it months ago & after extensive search in these sites plus some other sites & talking to many people, I figured out that the FLP level IV tranny built by Chuck Johnson is simply the best in the market now.
You can email Chuck at perftrans1@aol.com
Re: I need a bulletproof A4 transmission!! (Corvette4ever)
This is strange. You would think that with such a poopy 60ft that there wouldn't bee too much stress on the tranny so why it failed is my question. Could it be related to the transgo? Seems unusual to have a tranny fail with the mods you have.
Regardless FLP makes the bulletproof tranny you require. I believe ARE also can build quite an impressive set up as well.

Re: I need a bulletproof A4 transmission!! (2000^C5)
My stock Tranny with transgo shift kit never went out. It just wouln't hold the shifts with a big shot of Nitrous. Yank does Tranny upgrades also. I have one and it seems to be holding up. No runs on the new engine yet.
FLP does seem to be the favorite. Good Luck.
Re: I need a bulletproof A4 transmission!! (2000^C5)
Thanks fellas ...I have been doing some research. The FLP IV and Raptor Trans have been coming up...Seems they are chock full of performance components.
Re: I need a bulletproof A4 transmission!! (CRUZMISL)
Probably did not have anything to do with the transgo. But it may have been due to the powerloader increasing the line pressure. I have heard of alot of 4L60E's failing due to increased line pressure.

That crappy 60ft time was probably because the clutches were dying (more slippage). Same with MN6 cars, if the clutch is slipping then bye bye 60ft :U

That is so true.....These A4 C5 trans are inherrently weak in the 3-4 clutches. Many of the performance trans are packing 9 red eagle clutches and Kolene steels in the 3-4 drums(stock is 6)and a special 3-4 clutch release spring kit is installed to help prevent 3-4 clutch failure. One extra clutch is added to reverse and a heavy duty reaction shell is installed. They also have 3/8 inch oversized Kevlar or Red Eagle Powerbands that applies in 2nd and overdrive. They are very durable..If we are going to play with our toys ...we WILL pay the fun!
Re: I need a bulletproof A4 transmission!! (vstella)
Vince, Sorry to hear about your tranny. But it's an excellent excuse to upgrade!! Yank makes a tranny for our cars also. You may want to compare the Yank with the FLP before you make a decision. I didn't make it , but yes, I heard the track on Wednesday was very sick. They even asked some of the real fast guys to stop running. I may try tonight if I it doesn't rain and I have some time. So, you're going with an ARE package. I hear they are awesome!! Who's going to do your install? What happened with Mike Norris? Well, I guess when you get your tranny and head/cam package, I'll have to use the juice to catch up with you. Take care and good luck with all your upgrades. Hope to see you at the track sometime. Eric
