I put a post up asking for some advice on the rear wheel bearings but did not get what I was looking for. I know the rear knuckles are aluminum and I do not want to hit them with a hammer to get the upper and lower ball joints loose. I know that some of you guys have done your own rear bearings before so I am just asking how you are getting them apart without damaging the knuckles. I work on cars for a living but have not tackled much on my 02 coupe except electrical problems and oil pressure switch replacement.Any advice would be great and thanks in advance for your help.
Loosen the nuts on the ball joints and spin the nut out flush to the top of the bolt. Hit the nut with a hammer to loosen the ball joint up.
I loosen the nut a few turns , let the suspension drop then one hit with a BFH ( I use a 54oz. ) on the knuckle and it pops apart.
You use the spring to create the pulling on the ball joint shaft and a whack pops it loose. You won't hurt the knuckle and you won't ding the threads.
Jack it back up and take off the nut , then lower slowly
It looks good except the banging of the nuts to pop loose the knuckle.
Maybe with a deadblow hammer but I'd worry about dinging the threads with a metal hammer.
Thanks for the replys and you guys answered my questions . Going on vacation in a week so that looks like my job while Im home . Once again thanks for the help.
