I have a 2001 Z06. A few weeks ago i took off the rack to replace a hermonic balancer. After i did it, it drove fine. Ive already put about 100mi on it. But today i was going to take it out and when i turned it on, the Service Engine and Active Handling came on. It had a tcs code c1287. I turned the car off and i went to check the code wen i turned it on again the code had a H on it and not a C so i guess it was only the other time i turned it on. I drove i and it was driving fine. I just want to know why that could happen. Anyone??
When i took off the rack the sterring wheel was moved but when i put it on i did make sure it was on straight. I wheels do face straight and the wheel moves one way just as much as the other.
Any ideas why i am having this problem?? Thank you everyone.
Did you let the steering wheel spin around on its own? It might be 180 degrees out. Never mind...stupid of me there on that. Its obvious if the steering wheel is upside down.

Reason: DUH on me

It was when i first put it on but then i turned it and now its on straight. I there a certain way to put it on?? I spun it a few times when i was putting it back on. Could it not be on rite?
Also i did not get an alignment on it yet....would that couse it?
As long as you didn't remove the steering wheel itself, then with the shaft centered up that should be Ok. Yes, you might be out of alignment enough that the code will be set.
It sounds to me like you may have the steering wheel 360 degrees out. The only way to know for sure is to perform the Steering Position Sensor Test which requires a Tech 2. I'd suggest you find a shop that has one and have the test performed.
I would also suggest if you intend to continue to do complex repair procedures you obtain a service manual. You can get them in paper form on the auction site, on CD from members or download one free.
From the manual:
"The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly."
Well what do you think i should do first?? Should i just drive it till the code pops up again because it might have been a glitch? Or should i get an alginment and then get it tested?
Or wud me driving it cause something to go bad?? Also will the airbag go off if this code pops up while driving?

I can't see how this would cause the air bag to deploy. I would first find a shop that can do the test, have it tested and repaired if necessary and then get an alignment. Hopefully there's no damage and all that will be required is to properly align the steering wheel. Given that you moved the steering wheel quite bit I would not go the drive it a while and hope it's a glitch route. Let us know how it turns out.
The steering wheel has a clockspring in it that deploys the airbag. Are you getting any airbag messages on the "DIC" ?
You have to becareful to not spin the steering wheel when disconnected or you'll break the wire in the clock spring.
You may also be a little out of alignment since you removed the rack and this could be causing your problem. A good wheel alaignment may correct this problem.
Damage to the Steering Wheel Module Coil (Clockspring) will prevent an airbag deployment but not cause one. Deployment requires a set of values sensed by the Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) and then a signal transmitted through the frontal deployment loops.
