headlight gear troubles

i have just replaced the broken plastic headlight gear twice in two days.it works one or twice then rips the new gear apart.question is did i forget a part on assembly?there are three parts?the shaft,gear and rubber insulator that goes in between the two.i didnt see any other parts.it seems like there is alot of side to side play when put back together.should i just buy a complete new assembly?thanks in advance

Did you look at the other side to compare?

there is also a little plastic spacer that goes on the solid side of the gear wheel (maybe 3/16" thick)...

They have a replacment gear made of brass. See if you can find that one...And it helps to put the spacer in too.
