Whats the deal with this ls1 edit program. I am having a head/cam install and I already have the powerloader but have to send it back for reprograming. I figured I would do that as opposed to spending anouther $500 on ls1 edit programming. I guess my question is would I get more out of having ARE tunning my car with ls1edit or do you think the S.cole tuned powerloader is better. I dont think you would get 25 hp out of the powerloader but I've herd this about ls1 edit. Does it depend on whos doing it. Which way to go? Would it be worth anouther $500? Thanks for any suggestions.
I think you're always better off with on-dyno tuning vs mail order if you're trying to get the most out of it. You should also be aware that there are rumors that pro tuners have recently begun "protecting" their tuning w/o making customers aware of this. (This makes it difficult to examine or change thier tuning, including GM cal updates.) I can't confirm the validity of this but enough folks have reported issues that it's worth looking into if you're planning on sending your PL back to TTS. There's also the turn around time. All things considered, an additional tuning fee sounds like less hassle to me.
I've also heard that Steve Cole is realy good with the shift points on a auto(which I have) and the tran in general? The person I talked to about ARE tunning said that ARE would have ls1 edit soon and could save the poweroader settings and tune for the new cam with the ls1 edit program. Can someone elaborate on what exactally is being tunned(programed) and why a on dyno tune is better? Just trying to learn here. Thanks for the info.
Depends if you want to get the PL re programmed in your life time. I send mine back for re program in last Nov....finally have ordered the LS1edit....goin do my own. To each his own.....ye pays ye money and takes ye choice.

That's true *provided* the flash in the PCM can be read. In all cases it can be written on top of, but if "protected" it cannot be read.
You can adjust many things including the odds and ends like rev limiters, fan temps, tranny tuning and so forth that don't require any dyno tuning. It's stuff like spark tables, fuel curves, VE and the like (um, engine tuning) that really benefit from dyno tuning, particularly as you do things like change heads and cams, add blowers, etc. Cam with a lot of overlap? No problem, add timing. High compression bump? No problem, pull timing. Hard scavenging headers? A little fuel delivery work is in order. The ideas are the same as they've always been, you're just using the dyno to measure the impact of your changes. Check out the Carputing's website, http://www.carputing.com, for a feature list of what can be tinkered with.
It's possible to offset the hex tables where the actual values are stored, so you only see garbage when you read them. If you're comfortable using a hex editor, and have a PCM bench connection, you could read the tables out, find the offset and modify or clear the offsets.
I have looked at a lot of mail in tuner programs and have not found any I can't read, and only one that used a trick to prevent editing.
