I have a problem with the courtesy lights. bulbs ok, they work when car unlocks with remote or trunk is opened, but don't work when doors are opened. also think that there may be something to do with retained accessory power because radio doesn't shut off when doors are opened either. This leads to dead battery since the BCM isn't shutting down. I thought it might be something to do with door switches (although I can't find any) but both doors? seems odd
anyone have any ideas??
I'm going to suggest something that I think would cause you more problems than just the lights but its worth a look otherwise the BCM either has water on it/in it or its toast. Look inside of the door accordian tubes for a wire there that can short to the frame. In the elctrically sticky, Bill Curlee has a great picture of the offending wire. Otherwise, as stated, look for water contamination on/in the BCM or replace it if you know its got other issues. You door switches are not getting through to the BCM.
I'll check further into the door wires. no signs of water or contamination on the BCM or fusebox areas. It seems that the BCM is fine because there are no other issues other than the doors. when car is running and I pop the trunk i get a 'trunk ajar' message and lights come on, but no messages from the doors. so it doesn't know that the doors open to turn on lights, shut off radio, or give a warning message
thanks for the tip, and I'll let you know if it solves it
if it is in the jamb, it has to be some kind of magnetic switch as it is not visible. Thanks for all your help so far, eventually I'm sure that we'll find the culprit

Put the brakes on.....don't just start tearing things apart, unless you know exactly what you're searching for. If neither door being opened turns on the lights, then you need to find a common denominator.
After a quick look at the schematics, the BCM is the common denominator. The door ajar switch is part of the door latch mechanism, and provides a ground to the BCM when the door is open. What year is your car?
it is a 2002 Convertible. I don't know about the BCM being the problem since the lights and ajar messaging work when the trunk is opened, but not the doors. I suppose that it is possible, but I think that all would fail to work, not 2 out of 3

Reason: clarification
Thanks Lucky131969! I appreciate any and all help in finding the culprit. if the problem does lie with the BCM, I know that this can be accessed with a Tech II tool or some other software for OBD II diagnostics. Any recommendations there?

I take it you have not reviewed the schematics. The trunk ajar input to the BCM is independent of the doors.
The door ajar input to the BCM : Left door, connector C2, contact C2
Right door, connector C2, contact D1
The trunk ajar input to the BCM: connector C2, contact C12
sorry, no I have not got a set of schematics, yet anyway! but I'll check those connectors just to confirm that there isn't any kind of contaminant that is giving bad input

No problem....I'll post them...give me a few minutes
Do your map lights work on your rear view mirror if you turn them on manually with the doors closed? can you use your dimmer switch to manually turn on the dome lights when the doors are closed?I had this issue on my 02 vert and after starting with the basics, and following Luckys scematics,my problem led to the ground wire in the accordian door harness being bare exposed,Following the sticky thread on electrical issues,it solved mine, just an idea! Also keep in mind,if you were working on your car and had the doors opened for a period of time, the interior lights are on a time delay, and even then, when you close the doors, then open them again, they may not come on,till the bcm, door control modules reset,of some sort.Im no expert, but these are things I experienced with this issue, until I did the door harness fix!

Yeah, the map lights work fine, doors open or closed with or without the car running. the courstesy lights work fine with the dimmer switch on the dash. I understand the timer but besides no light though, I get no door ajar warning when the car is running and the door is open. I didn't find a problem with the door accordian wiring, but I'll check into that again and the connectors on the door modules to see if anything is corroded or loose there

Check the wires by the door latch inside the door.

There is another way to check the input from the door latches. Since the BCM is hot all the time, I would disconnect the battery first. You can unplug connector C2 from the BCM, and using a DMM, check for a ground on pin C2(left door) when the door is open. Then check for a ground on pin D1(right door) when the door is open. Open and close the doors while checking the appropriate pin, and you should see the resistance go from 0 to open.
