I remember some time ago there was someone on the forum either selling or showing some plates that fit over the ashtray to mount stuff like nitrous switches. I believe they may have been made of some sort of metal possibly aluminum. Anyways, I am looking for ideas on how to mount my switches and was wondering if anyone has info, pics, or products that do this cleanly.
Re: Ashtray Plate for Nitrous switch mounting? (bwhitmore)
We have a custom switch box which fits snugly into the ashtray (when removed) and allows the large door to close completely. It uses a small plastic project box from Radio Shack, and appropriate switches for my application. Don't have a handy pic but can get you one in the next day or so. I have my arming switch, purge switch, and on-off-on DPDT switch for two bottle heaters mounted on the box.
My heater panel uses a green led to show the heater is armed, and a red led to show the heater is on. When the bottle reaches temperature, the red led turns off, so at the starting line, I should see two green leds... One for the system armed, and a second for the bottle at temp (red led is off)

Is that what your using, the only reason I ask is because I was wondering if you could get one with only two switches in it, and if one will control the purge like a push button will.
Re: Ashtray Plate for Nitrous switch mounting? (bwhitmore)
Yes, that is what I am using. Switch one controls the master and also can control a bottle heater if you have one. Swtich two controls the remote bottle opener if you have one. Switch three is the purge. You could always install and not use one of them, or use it for a line lock, as I've wired them before.....

Very nice nevrenuf! Extremelly clean lookin install. I install all kinds of stuff in police cars, firetrucks, ambulances, undercovers cars, and all other types of vehicles and I would be proud to show that work off. :yesnod:

Tom, how did you get your switch to fit flush? Mine keeps binding due on the wiring at the back of it. :(
After talking with Tom about the same problem I had we decided cutting the back out behind the switch is the way to go. It fits perfect now. I believe a new trim panel costs around $50 from GmPartsDirect so I will just get a new one whenever I take it out.
Re: Ashtray Plate for Nitrous switch mounting? (C5Noir)
I cut a rectangle out of the back which does include the screw that normally goes behind the ash tray. So now instead of two screws to mount the panel in that area there is just one beside the lighter. Of course it still is very solid. Just trim enough out of there until the switch wants to fit well.
Re: Ashtray Plate for Nitrous switch mounting? (C5Noir)
Actually , I soldered all my connections (I always do that) and used heat shrink tubing, so that all wiring comes off the terminals at 90 degrees. That way, the switch does not get "deeper" due to the wiring and connectors. I did not have to cut out any of my console, the wiring harness fits easily through the stock hole in the back right of the ashtray hole.
