Best thing to do is remove Main Serp Belt, then the AC belt below, then take off all pulleys and clean them by hand. Also, inspect the bearings to make sure the seals haven't failed. CLEAN the belt with a rag and some alchohol, replace if necessary.
I had a slight squeal.....chirp come back after about a year earlier today. Traced it down to the AC belt and cleaned up all the grease, dirt, reinstalled pulleys and it's completely silent now !
For what ever reason you want to clean the belt pullies , do NOT get any solvent i.e WD40, brake cleaner, alcohol, waxes, polishes, silicone, ect. All these dry out the belts and cause premature failure, sqeal, ect.. Tire dressings on belts are also a no-no. For this reason alone , remove the belts before cleaning the contact area of a belt pulley.
Removing the pulleys is overkill.Brake cleaner leaves no residue or any thing that will harm the belt, but I wouldnt use it while the belts are on the car, remove the belts and clean em if you must.
