I have a 99 FRC with the 76mm MAF sensor. From what I understand 2001 + cars have a 85mm MAF. Will upgrading my MAF produce more power? Is it as easy as pulling the old one out and putting the new one in? or is there any fitment issues? Wiring? How much HP is it worth?
The MAF itself isn't worth any HP on a stock car. You would also need a harness adapter to change from 3 wire to 5 wire, because your IAT sensor will now be integrated into the MAF. That MAF can be had CHEAP online, it's the same one that was on the 05-06 GTO, 01+ C5, trucks, etc. Realistically, it's not worth it, but if I were changing to a Halltech or other intake that would already fit the larger MAF so you don't have to track down tubing to fit I would probably do the MAF swap just to know I did.
Summary, if you want a new intake which is really where the power gain would come from, go ahead and get an 01+ Halltech and get the newer MAF and harness adapter and do both together.
Yep, you would need the entire MAF table for the 85mm. Not worth the trouble and expense for just a filtration upgrade, unless your doing more and need a tune. I did the upgrade, but you can see in my sig I did more.
It might be interesting to do a WOT data log with my stock 76mm MAF and then switch to a 85mm MAF to see if my MAP readings change any. I do see a little MAP bobble at upper RPM, down to 96 or 97 MPa. Of course my car isn't stock (471 rwhp according to a Dynacom chassis dyno), so it might be time for a larger MAF for me too.
