I just got my very first C5, and I'm already dreading that first set of new tires. I am not an aggressive driver. I need comments on how long factory Goodyear EMT's have lasted, and I need some suggestions on replacement tires, including the price (for all 4), how well they compare to the Goodyears, and how long the replacement tires last. Thanks!
Welcome. I, and a lot of others, have replaced the GY's with Firestone Firehawk tires. I find they are quieter and provide better traction. If you want non-runflats that is a different story.
I think the average lifespan of the Goodyear EMT is about 20k miles.
But to be honest, I think the average lifespan of ANY performance oriented tire is 20k miles. Yes, there are outliers who get 40k miles - and there are people who get much less too.
I know M3, Viper, Corvette, Fbody, and Mustang owners who ALL seem to get about 20k on a set of rubber. Brand, size, rating - nothing seems to be a big differentiator.
Assuming my theory is true, then the remaining factor is to get what you like and what you can afford.
PS: non-run-flats will make you much happier! :)
I got 40,000 miles on my Goodyears. New 99 mn6 coupe. I am a reasonable driver, but I get into it from time to time. At 40,000 there was still miles left , but the tires had become so hard riding and noisey, that I researched and purchased a set of Michelin Pilot Sport, AS, ZP. I purchased them from Discount Tire here 1 mile from my home. I paid $1189.00 total out the door, 90 day's same as cash. The price included mounting, balancing,( I had the balancing redone by my man) etc. They allowed me $150.00 for the old Goodyears. The price of $1189.00 included the $150.00 allowance. The tires now have 3000 miles and I am more than totally satisfied in all respects. I looked at Firestones and Goodyears also. Previously I had a problem with Firestones, and frankly I don't trust them on any of my vehicles. The Michelin's are excellent riding, quiet and handle great. Another Corvette nut who goes by the name of REPVETTE was also at the same tire juncture as I was, only he wanted to replace his brand new 2002 Goodyears on his new 2002 coupe, mn6, with another brand due to the hard ride and noise. We together drove my car on various road surfaces and speeds to compare the two brands and the Michelin's we both ageed, was much smoother and QUIET. I don't know If he has made a decision as of yet. I hope my experience my be of value to you in your decision making process. Good Luck ! THE BIG GUY !! :chevy
I just got some new tires for my C5 and it had about 32k miles on it.
The front ones were more worn down than the rear, but I replaced one of the rear because I had a nail in it and it could use a new one anyways. Naturally the front tires are less expensive than the rear b/c the diameter is smaller. When I bougth them, I purchased the tire protection plan for them too b/c for such an expensive tire, it's definitely a good idea. For the rear one, I paid a total of about $550 for tire and protection. Definitely noticed a difference with the new ones....so, if you're into performance, don't wait, get them now!
I would like to stick with runflats when mine wear out. The Firestone's specs from I think tire rack show that it has over an inch less tread width than the Goodyears. Is this true and do the Firestone's look like they are the same width from the back. I know that some 275s are skinnier looking than others?
I've got a little over 10k miles on mine and when I took my car to the tire place to try to repair a "flat" (which wasn't repairable) they said the rears were already at the wearmark. Funny since I don't drive often or aggressively..
If you are interested enough to spend the time, get the specifications for the Goodyears, Firestones and Michelins. The answer is in the facts. One big factor you will uncover is that the Firestones are " smaller " tires. Also check the weight of the three. I guess it all boils down to you get what you pay for. Remember, a salesman works on a commission. Good Luck !! THE BIG GUY !! :chevy
I've been riding on my new Yokohama AVS runflats for about a month now. Here are my impressions - If you just want to drive conservatively around towm, they are much better than the stock Goodyears, they are quieter, they make the car feel softer over bumps, have a cool tread design, and are much easier to turn at slower speeds (eg, parallel parking). But at higher speeds (ie, 70 mph+), they suck, they feel like you're driving a 50's car with exaggerated power steering (ie, they are too easier to turn). This is especially true when driving hard and fast through corners which is what a Corvette is supposed to be all about. Conclusion, I'll switch back to Goodyears next time, Rick
I just ordered a set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S ZPs from the local America's Tire shop. The front size is out of stock in their West Coast warehouse and they do not expect a factory delivery on them for at least a month. My tires were secured from an independent distributor warehouse and will be here next week.
When I switch over to the Michelins this month I will have a used set of original Goodyear EMTs for sale. My fronts are at 6/32" and the rears are at 5/32". I am taking a cross country trip so must insure enough tire tread to get me back home after 10,000+ miles.
Does anyone know the used tire shipping routine? :confused:Just tie a label on each tire and drop off at the shipper? What kind of a shipping company? How to find a shipping company?
Just installed the Michelin Pilot Sport ZP's. Put 1600 miles on them within 3 days. (Had them installed and then took off cross country) BIG improvement in traction and ride quality. Like driving a new car. Really happy with them. I considered the Firehawks also. One guy I know who surs the forum just put a set on his 97. He loves those too. I think your're safe with any one of them.
