Steering noises... power steering pump?
85k miles on my '01, and about 5-7k miles ago I started to hear a squeaking noise when making low speed turns and moving in and out of parking spaces/garages. The squeaking noises have gotten worse, and I'm unsure if the groaning noise that now comes with them is the same or not. It squeaks pretty frequently, and sometimes it comes with a groaning/whining noise.
It could be the PS pump. I would start the car, pop the hood and turn the wheel thru the window back and forth. If the noise gets louder when you turn the wheel its the PS pump.
If the noise doesnt change at idle when you do this, you could have some bad bearings in one of your pullies. Thats also an easy fix. To check those, the car has to be turned OFF!
Remove the Serpentine belt. Take each pulley and spin it back and forth with your wrist. Dont let the pulley go. The pulleys should feel smooth and not have any type of roughness, or feels like its catching. If it does that pulley has to come off and replace the bearings for it.
