Default is my column lock disabled??

i have read the sticky and may have overlooked the answer to this question so i apologize in advance if that's the case. while sitting in the seat with no key in the ignition i can turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and right with the security light blinking and all, no locking.

the question i have is when i turn the key to the on position i can hear a motor run for a brief second under the column and when i turn the key off i hear the same motor again......is the column lock bypassed? will this noise continue even though the lock is bypasses??

thanks in advance, i just didn't want to pull the dash apart to verify and risk snapping a plastic piece in this colder weather (ok flame me for not having a heated garage, yet.....i can take it) (but the shop is wired for future heating and air so i preplanned....cut me a little slack)

If you hear the column-lock motor running when you turn the key to off or on, then you do not have a CLB installed. However, since you state that your column does not lock with no key in the ignition, then your locking mechanism or pin has probably been removed which would've probably been done under a GM recall. Please realize that as long as there is an activating column lock motor , you aren't safe from eventual column lock problems even though the locking pin has been removed. The GM fix has proven to be ineffective over time and will fail.

it is a manual 98 coupe. i read the sticky but got kinda lost, help me slightly a4 vs mn6 are those the trans? are all manuals a4? don't wanna search all day if i can get a quick answer but don't wanna sound ignorant, heck i've only owned her since nov2009.....it might take a while before i have all the jargon up to speed.

are all the clb's the same? i noticed a couple from several different suppliers?

so obviously i need to do the additional wiring since it is a manual?

i truly appreciate all the help

went home to check it out and no i did not see anything like the picture in the linked post. nothing looked out of place or hanging, so if it was spliced it was the neatest looking job made to look like factory i have ever seen! there was 1 purple wire coming off of the lower left connector; however, it ran with other factory wiring, no splices in it.

placing the order online with coh now.........if somehow i missed the spliced purple wire will i know it? will it throw a code or act up in any way?

i really appreciate your time

Please post back your results once you do the install.[/QUOTE]

its all done and i feel better now knowing i have decreased my odds of not being able to move due to the column lock issue.....no column motor sounds at start up or turn off now!

what a vendor corvettes of houston got the parts to me fast cudos to coh

installed the 1-4 shift override as well.....both working great.

also thanks to last minute pm help from "Cybermind" ......he walked me through the final stages of pulling out the "harness k" which had been installed previously.

what a resource this forum is.......priceless!

Mn6 is the 6 speed manual that is in all C5's except the Z06. These are M12. Difference from the MN6 is in the gear ratios of 1st through 4th.

CLB's are all pretty much the same. An electronic relay basically. There are instructions on this Forum for building your own if you want to try that. I recommend you purchase from one of the supporting Forum Vendors. 3 that I have dealt with are Corvettes of Dallas, Corvettes of Houston, and Thunder Racing. Cost is about $50 plus shipping.

Since you have a Mn6 you need to look in the passenger footwell near the Fusebox and BCM ( large silver box) for the presence of a purple wire that has been spliced into. Factory wiring did NOT have splices. Here is a link that has pictures of exactly what you are looking for;

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...please-56.html

Then scroll to post #1107

If you have the spliced purple wire shown then look for the relay that they added the purple wire to.. If you have them then you need to bypass that relay in order for the CLB to work properly. Not all manuals got the spliced wiring and relay. It was a function of when the Column Lock recall was done to the car.

If you have it post back here or PM me and I can provide specific instructions on how to bypass the relay.

I've just installed a CLB and although I've had recall 04006 done, there was no K-harness and no spliced purple wire on the Steering Column Lock Relay. There is however a purple wire going to this relay which appears to be factory installed. In fact the whole set-up is at it appears in the Service Manual schematics. And so far the car runs fine.

Some posts recommend bypassing this relay if it there is a purple wire attached, spliced or otherwise due to timing glitches.

Your comments would be helpful.

Thanks for your comments and advice.

I wasn't looking forward to installing the jumper at the Steering Column Lock Relay as there is very little exposed wire to work with, so this at least this saves me a lot of hassle.

Sometime in the future when I'm feeling ambitious, I may go ahead and try to install the bypass anyway. After studying the Service Manual some more, it appears that the SCL relay is only there to activate the CL motor and with the CLB installed, the relay serves no useful purpose. Bypassing of this unnecessary serial component in the circuit should help to avoid any future problems .

Thanks again for your help.
