Hey guys,I have had a problem a couple of times in my 02 C5 coupe(A4).Sometimes when I put it in park and shut off the motor the key wont turn all the way to the left where it will come out.At first I thought the shifter wasn't making good contact with a switch so I tried pushing forward on it but no luck. The only way I have found to fix it is to start the car again and actually move the car(back up a few feet and pull back to the same spot)then no problem.Has happened about 3 times in a year and a half.It happened again last night so I thought I would ask the gurus!
I expect it would be the park switch. Once i have seen an aftermarket key be the problem. I do not think the starting of the car made a diffrence just that when shifter moved the switch made the contact needed. you wrote about shifting, but still i think that was the problem. Hope this helps
I saw this happen on my car this past weekend. I had replaced my shifter boot with a shift plate. I replaced my factory know with a nice new custom ****. Anyway, after all this work, when I turned off the car, my key would not go all the way to the left to allow me to remove it. For me, it was the shifter not raising all the way up when I placed it in park. It turns out the new **** was not quite installed right. I adjusted my ****, and now it works fine.
All this is to say, that the issue may be around your shifter. You might want to pull your console, and check everything around the shifter.
Thanks for the replies everybody.I have installed a Flameball shifter **** and first had the problem right after.I am thinking now after reading these posts that the shift ball may not have been all the way up because I only tried to push if forward and did not pull up on the ball.sometimes it is a little sticky and if that could cause the above problem that makes sense. The next time it happens I will try that.Since I was shifting around and the problem did not go away until I started it maybe the **** has to be all the way up before the engine is killed.
