I'm sure this has been discussed before but I do not see any reason to have this with a high performance engine. If we do all we can to get the heat out of the engine compartment then why would we want to have this under the hood? I can understand the factory supplying this for a stock engine to help hold in heat for cold weather.
What are your thoughts? I think I'm going to take mine out.
I have been running without one for a year, and have notice no difference in noise, heat, ect. I removed it to install a custom pad and have never finished the custom pad.
In case you saw the Michigan address I'm in Fl for the winter right now so it is being driven not stored.

Can't say I've talked to anyone yet, that said the hood insulation was slowing their car down, or impeding performance in any way....by holding in heat.
It's your car.....if you want to rip it out...then do it....you don't need anyone's blessing.

aw.....come on Mike, give me your blessing to rip it out

To each their own, just not my thing. Honestly, I think it looks good with the molded logo in the center, and of course....clean. Conversely, it looks like crap when dirty or tattered.
Here's my theory...they're mainly for sound insulation to reduce annoying noises coming into the cabin. Any insulation that reduces noise and heat getting into the cabin (like the firewall pad and carpet under pads) makes the occupants more comfortable.
In days of old, owners didn't enjoy hearing the roar of incoming air into an un-silenced air cleaner and other engine noises. And it protected paint from carburetor backfires. Now they're probably more like ashtrays...some old habits are just hard to break.
The "fire retardant" theory probably applied more to the carburetor generations of cars than fuel injection. And how long would it take for the perimeter plastic fasteners to melt allowing the insulator to fall and smother a flame? The insulator already sits right on top of the motor with the hood closed as it is.
Someone ask "Evil-Twin" for the definitive answer...

Mine got tattered when I threw a belt. (I had a crank pulley that separated.) I can't see any way to fix it, so I'll probably just take it off. If I can ever save up enough money for a Maggie, I think I'm gonna do the "Hole in the hood" mod anyway.

yea, I don't think any insulation will help the "Hole in the hood" mod!
I'm going to bet hotwheels is probably real close to the answer.

same thing happened to me. Took the liner off, no problems yet.
How about protecting the surface paint from the additional heat generated from the engine ?
Digging up a couple month old thread here.. but that's my concern too. With 100+ degree ambient temps, would the added heat from the engine start causing problems with the paint?
Mine's all dirty and tattered up. It looks nice new, but then again I've seen some without it that look clean as well. Wondering if I could get away without mine.

Took mine off two years ago to paint the logo, I have a 98. Found out that GM didn't paint the insider of the hood. If you take it off, be prepared to paint. Cuz it looks bad without the liner.
I also would like to hear more about the effect on the outer paint surface.
My '04 also has vinyl hood stripes. Any one experinced in this regard?
Thanks
