just experienced the shut down from the steering colum problem. had the car six years now, no recall notice. new to forum and didn't pay any thought to it. still a problem?? 60,145 miles
I have a 1998 and finally put the CLB in last summer after getting it locked up....lucky for me it released itself after a few minutes, I already had the CLB, so had it installed a few days later.
It's true, it can rear its ugly head at any time, even after 12 years.
I wouldn't take it to the dealer because most of the dealer recall procedures don't fix the problem and usually involves unneeded/expensive parts. You will end up getting the CLB from Corvettes of Houston anyways. Automatics have a higher success rate with the dealer fix but I still wouldn't do it. Send a private message to 8VETTE7 for some more specific help. good luck
thanks everybody. 1998 auto. gonna have it towed to dealer monday.
IMO... BAD IDEA. They'll perform a recall that has been proven time and time again not to work. My advice would be to purchase a column lock bypass from a forum vendor like corvettes of houston and be done with it. It's a 15 minute install AT THE MOST.

Forget the dealer "fix". They don't know what they are doing. Buy the Column Lock Bypass from Corvettes of Houston for $45.00. It comes with DIY instructions. You will have it installed in about an hour and your problems are over.

You should fill out your profile so we can tell where you're located. There might be someone close enough to you to give you a hand if you run into trouble with the CLB.

I did that years ago. If it is still locked turn the key switch on and grab the steering wheel at 10 and 2 and turn the wheel back and forth very fast. This usually will free it up. You can then unplug the col lock mtr. You can then install the col lock setup.

Jarring the steering wheel like that may unlock it, but it isn't necessary. The CLB you purchased should come with a device to unlock the steering column. It's a cord that connects to the harness where you will install the CLB after unlocking the column and it plugs into the cigarette lighter. That will unlock your column so you can install the bypass...
CLB came today from corvettes of houston. open up knee panel and found k-harness installed. tried various resetting and called chrisopher at corvettes of houston. pointed to the BCM, removed and open up, found burnt PC board at green plug. Dealer and reprogram???
