So the other day my Corvette was smoking through the hood while I was a stop light. So I lifted the car and saw that I have an oil leak and the oil is hitting the exhaust which is causing it to smoke up out of the hood. It's not leaking enough where I have to add oil, but I already bought the seal and gasket. Only thing is that I have an event to go to this weekend, and I don't want my car smoking the whole time. Is there anything that I can clamp or wrap on to the exhaust to keep the oil off it? It would only be a temp fix for about a week until the parts get in. Please don't respond to anything other the question. I don't need to read 3 pages of "fix the leak" or not to drive it (the car is fine to drive). It's getting fixed first thing next week, just need to keep it from smoking in the meantime. Thanks!
Reminds me of when I still had the C4 and it would spew ATF from the extended housing seal on to the exhaust occasionally. I parked one day and a cute gal says “Hey, your car is smokin” and I said “Well, thank you”. I then turned around and saw smoke bellowing out from the gills.
Only you know where the oil leak is and how to best divert it. I would not try using rags or you may have more than smoke to deal with.
Yeah it's smoking right behind the lower oil pan. I've taken it to a few mechanics and they can't pin-point the problem, so I'm just having them replace all the gaskets.
Not sure if your leak is anywhere that gets hot... but when we were kids on motorbikes, and the fork seals were leaking, we'd use panty liners to control the leak until we got round to fixing them!
Yeah it gets hot where the oil hits. I heard that the small drops blow back onto the downpipe of the vette. When the pipes get hot...that's what causes the smoke. I'll try that thermal wrap idea. Thanks for the ideas, I really appreciate it. We figured out it's the rear main seal and upper pan gasket. It's not leaking bad, but it's got to be fixed...
