I have posted in the past about people trying to "Find" 3rd usually end up blowing it. It's just a straight palm push forward. The centering springs pop you into position on the way up.. But just found another strange anomaly.....2nd is just a straight pull down. Although there are centering springs to pull the shifter to the 3/4 postion they don't seem to have an effect when shifting to 2nd. They work for the 2nd to 3rd perfectly. I used to keep some side pressure on the stick when pulling to 2nd but it is not needed. It's kinda unnerving to do it and trust you'll end up in 2nd but it
works every time. Helps by lettting you just row through the gears rather than find them. Try it you'll like it... Pretty cool.
Re: Missed Shift? Another observation.. (chuckster)
My C5 is the first standard I've ever driven regularly, and I have to say I was apprehensive at first, but I really haven't had any trouble getting the gears. Getting the clutch to engage without killing it is another thing (well, it was at first anyway). It feels so perfectly designed and I haven't had to "find" any gear (thankfully the gearbox won't let me put it into R at speed!).
Re: Missed Shift? Another observation.. (chuckster)
I was surprised to see that someone else just brought this up, since I just had the same realization a few days ago.
I have a 2002 with less than 1 k miles on it. I started out driving it just like other standards that I have owned in the past, but I noticed a little catch sometimes when going from fist to second under light acceleration .This was very frustrating since it was sometimes accompanied by the CAGS lockout (have not yet received the CAGS eliminator that I ordered). I decided to work around it by trying not to force it so hard to the left when shifting downward towards second. I figured it would just guide me to 4th if the CAGS lockout was enabled. I was pleasantly surprised to see how well this worked under both light and hard acceleration.
It seems like something in the manual should talk about this. Nobody at the dealership mentioned anything and the video that you get with the car does not mention it either. I wonder if it is purposefully designed this way, or if it might just be some side effect of the auto centering design.
Either way, it’s an amazing car, and I’m really enjoying it.
