Just a few questions on the Optima Red for the C5:
1) What model number fits and is supposed to be used in the C5?
2) Are they a side terminal battery?
3) Do they secure in the tray the same as the stock battery?
4) What do they cost?
5) Is the Optima Yellow the deep cycle?
6) Can you use a battery maintainer on a redtop?
Thanks!
Ed
I went to Pep Boys and bought the model that looked like mine (I brought the dead one in). It fit fine - screwed right back into place where the other had been. The terminals screwed into the front side the same. It did have a second set of terminals out the top but the "Free at the time" cover took care of that.
I think like $105 or so on the cost. My old (if you can call a 2001 battery old) would die every time I was out in the garage working on the car. Since the red top install, it just jumps up to start the first crank every time. Problem solved.
LAPD sold me mine about 1 month ago. Ordered on Friday, came the next day, Saturday for $110.00 delievered to my door. Get the cover at a cost of 5.00 dollars from Optima but LAPD should have a supply of covers this month.
Mine fit right in with no mods. It has side posts and top posts. The top posts are completely covered with the cover (which comes in red or yellow so if you want the red top but have a yellow Vette, you can cover it yellow). My 00 Vert came with a Delco rated at 600 Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) but the one LAPD sold me is rated at 800 CCA. Now the cars cranks faster and fires up like a light switch.
The yellow is the deep cycle and the red is not but the red is most likely what you need.
Even if you can get the battery cheaper at Pep Boys, I always try to support the vendors here.
You can use any charger on the red top and will not leak. I replaced my stock battery cause I did not want to have acid on my Vette and after all, we were all warned, weren't we? Anyway, I gave my perfectly good battery to my Farmer friend that really needed it. As to the model #, I just do not know. The car is tripple covered and I just am too tired to go look, Sorry!     :smash:  :yesnod:  :seeya
I have a red top in mine, part # SC 34U it is 980 CA or more important 800 CCA. Really turns it over even when it's cold out. Bought from Shaun at LAPD, 1 day to my door. Shauns phone is 877-843-5273, as they say, you can't go wrong. Good luck, Skip. ;)
the model numbers on these red tops are very inconsistent. My friend has a Supra with the a red top that is 980/800 and it has a completely different model number.
At my pep boys they had a 34/78 model and a 6?/35 model or something like that. I asked the guy to look it up in his computer and he said neither fit. I asked what the 34/78 meant and he said it fit 34 and 78 Group number batteries. My 2000 GM Battery was a group 78. I bouth the RED34/78 model battery and it fit and works like a champ. I think group 34 and 78 are the same size roughly. That supports what skip89 says as he got the Cu34.
I appreciate the info. I wanted to be sure the battery secured the same way as the stock one, too, and from what I've seen here it does. Does anyone know if a person is supposed to leave these batteries on a "maintainer" over the winter the same as a regular battery?

C5XTASY..........Last fall, after reading all the horror stories about the stock GM battery, I replaced my battery with a yellow top from LAPD. Well, when I went to put the car in storage, I forgot my battery tender at home. Thinking I would get back to the car in a week or two, I left the battery connected. Sure enough, I did not get back to the car for six weeks. I fully expected the battery to be dead. Surprisingly, however, the car fired right up. (In fact, the weather was so nice, I took her out for a 50-mile spin.) Nevertheless, I did hook up a tender when I put her back into storage.
Given the fact that our cars sit over the winter months, I went with the yellow top. Also, as others have mentioned, make sure you get the snap on cover. Otherwise, the top posts are exposed and, in my opinion, a potential hazard.
