it sounds like a pinging noise, but it obviously has something to do with the ac system. its pretty loud, and completely goes away after i turn on the air conditioning. sounds almost like a loose bearing rattling around. when the clutch engages, it makes a pretty loud click also that im pretty sure wasnt there before. the air conditioning works just fine also. any ideas? not exactly sure what kind of bearings are involved with the ac compressor clutch.

you have a 99 corvette, chances are the tensioner bearing and Idler bearing are going out,,,there is a design flaw in these bearing seals.. but getting 11 years out of them is not a bad deal... the noise you may be hearing is the seal actually spinning within the bearing.. in any event the grease is starting to dry up.. and when you put a load on the bearings( turn on the AC) it redistributes what grease is left... and quiets down... you can buy some high speed ( 5,000 , 6,000 rpm grease ) it has to be high temp also.. but you cant just buy high temp grease like that found for wheel bearings.. or you can buy new bearings they are about 50 dollars for the two at NAPA, or other good supply houses.
yeah i can hear a high pitched metal on metal grinding noise when i spin the pulley by hand. if i spin the clutch with it, there is no noise. everything seems pretty firm, but i think it could still be a bearing failure. anyone have a white up on how to fix this?
im sure im not the only one with this failure. anyone have pics of the bearing that fails? im wondering how difficult this will be to replace. if its not too big of a job, ill leave it on the car, but if i need to press in the bearings, i guess ill have to remove the compressor.
