Default 2001 Coupe... What mods should be done?

I just bought a 2001 6 spd. Coupe, and I've got a B&M Ripper shift on the way. What other mods should I consider with a budget of around $500? I DON'T want to void my warranty, so some mods are out of the question for the time being.

Anyone have any suggestions? You just bought the car, and you've got $500 to spend on mods without voiding your warranty.

Thanks,
Scott Cooper :cool::cheers:

Which intake mod would you recomend? There seem to be more different intake mods than you can shake a vette at.

Thanks,
Scott :yesnod:

You're right, lot of choices. If you would rather not cut the shroud you could go with the Blackwing or a hi-flow folter for your stock air box. Easy return to stock. Otherwise there are a number of choices. There have been concerns raised about some of the units that sit low and could be prone to sucking water if you hit large puddles. This equates to a bad day. Another option would be to buy the 2002 airbox or cut your stock air box to allow more air flow. I like my Blackwing for looks and performance.

The blackwing is a direct replacement for the stock air filter? What about the MAF, does that need replacement also, or will it blow my budget?

Here's what I've got ordered already:
B&M Ripper shifter :D
CAGS defeat (already had it burn me 3 TIMES in a day & a half)
Numerous cosmetic things (chrome lic. plate frame, chrome corvette letters, ect)

Thanks for the input guys!

Cold air is a no brainer. I have a Vortex and am very happy with it. I would not mess with the MAF or the air bridge. With the Vortex and B & B PRT's I picked up about 18 lb/ft of torque and about 15 rwhp. I have now run 12.77 @ 111.3 in the quarter in 70 degree weather - and I have only drag raced three times in my life.

And for $20 get the GAGS defeat.
Best mod you will ever get for a 6 speed
and the least expensive and the easiest to
install!

For <$500, I'd do the Blackwing and some appearance mods like Z06 screens, etc. I did the Blackwing on my '01, nice power improvement, and simple install. The exhaust mod is cheap, but I've never heard it, and the one website sample sounded like crap to me. An aftermarket exhaust would obviously put you over budget, for now. The CAGS defeat is very nice also. Maybe a cover if your car is stored outside, or Wet Okoles to cover the so-so seats. :seeya

Thanks for the suggestions, the CAGS defeat is on order, and I've changed my shifter order to a Hurst from the B&M based on comments from the forum. It seems the consensus is that airbox modifications, either a replacement or a replacement filter should be the next mod. The Blackwing filter and the Vortex seem to be around the same money, which is the more bang for the buck?

The car is garaged, so a cover is pretty low priority.

Thanks,
Scott Cooper :chevy

Go with the SLP maf and the Vortex. I have the Kirban shifter and am very happy with it. I also shortened the shifter length on the Kirban real short throws. Shorter than anything on the market!!!!

Hi Silversport,

How do I do this, bought Z06 airbox cover from Ken, but new to vettes? Would you also change the bridge? How much improvement will it provide?

What air filter do you use?

Joe

Donaldson Blackwing, hood seal, and Z06 screens for the front (open up the foglight shrouds). Then start saving for an aftermarket exhaust if you want to get a little more "sound" out of the motor.

Intake IS the best bang for the buck at that budget level. Don't worry about cutting the shroud if you go with a Vortex; you can get another one for $50 if you want one. It's easy to do and has the most proven hp increase out of all of them. If you don't want to do that, get the blackwing :smash:

Look at my sig, my '01 Coupe is running very, very well. I agree that your next mod should be an airbox, either blackwing or Vortex, I have the Vortex and it works great. Then I would just do the short shifter and CAGS, like you're doing and then save up for some headers and cat-back exhaust. My car sounds evil and runs like a raped ape with the all the mods I just listed. I wouldn't mess with any MAF's or any electronic stuff.

Since you are on a budget....You might want to look into that $20.00 tweeter. I just installed them this weekend. Of course, since I'm mechanically challenged it took me 2 hours! However, I must say when I played with the fader, and went to rear speakers and then balanced for just one speaker and cranked up the volume, I could hear the tweeters tweaking good. Then I listened on just the rears. Then, I brought in the fronts and you could really hear the separation and the highs. I was shocked! It made that big of a distance. Best bang for the buck!

Thanks, I guess I'll go with the Vortex airbox. As far as the sound system goes, I'll be adding a 10" Subwoofer next week to take care of the famous "non-existant bass sound system". I lived with crap sound for 4 years with my 99 coupe since it was a lease, I'm not gonna put up with it in my 2001. That probably pushes the airbox mod back a month or two.

Here's the mods I'm doing / have already done:
Hurst shifter
CAGS defeat
Blackout film on tail lights
Chrome "Corvette" letters on front & rear
Chrome license plate frame
Chrome letters pass. airbag
Vortex airbox (pending)
10" Subwoofer in left rear stowage compartment (installed next week)

Also, a quick question, I've yet to install the Hurst shifter, but the stock seems to be quite stiff shifting 3rd - 4th, and 5th - 6th, is this normal, or should I have the dealer look at it (before I swap out shifters, obviously :hat )? Maybe it's just me, but it's much stiffer shifting than my Porsche was, and the 1-2-3 shifts are just fine.

Scott Cooper :U
