Default Volant Air Intake

Just ordered A Volant to replace the bottom feeder that I've been using. Won't be a cold or ram air system either, but the Z's have some cold air coming in anyway. I figure If I'm stuck in traffic I'm not going to need 'top' performance anyway... My main concern was the potential to hydrolock the motor, even though that would be just a stupid move to get in that kind of situation.

I first purchased a used C6 Z06 intake since that design is just the schnizzle in my book. Check it out, you'll like it. Straight flow tapering down as needed with no odd directional changes and nothing to disturb the air flow. Only problem I had with it is that it just wasn't going to fit without some serious resizing (hacking up) mods. Oh well, it was only $40. I haven't dropped the idea of that design and may get all ambitious and design a similar setup for the C5. The only thing similar to it is the Honker, except the Honker goes thru the shroud. At least the Honker is not a bottom feeder, which is a plus, but Callaway priced it way out of anything I'd consider paying.

Ok, back to the Volant. I just happened to like the angles of the Y-tube, giving it less directional change, less turbulance, and the dual filters ought to provide more than enough surface area.

I thought about just putting the stock Z06 box back in, but I just can't get over the design. Great for Jiffty Lube to check the filter (you know, just before they try to sell you their $65 injector cleaning), but bad for performance with that crimped rubber neck restricting air flow out of the box. I'll be using my existing VR bridge that I have set up with the MAF at the TB side. Should be a sweet combination.

I have the volant on my 04CE and I like it. To get hydro-lock you need to pull in a pretty fair amount of water. This would require some serious vacuum down at the filters. But if you consider how much surface area is in those two cones you quickly conclude that any vacuum is disipated over such a broad area that there's not enough left to lift much water. In fact, that's why volants flow so well - there's much less air restriction when you have twice the intake area.
Enjoy the Volant. It's a well-made filter and looks pretty cool to boot.
