Crazy Noise - Need An expert!
Hello everybody!
I have a 99 C5 A6 with about 60K and no mods. This morning, about a minute after I fired 'er up, a crazy sound came from somewhere around my front-right wheel well. The only thing I can compare it to is one of those crappy 12V air compressors that you use to inflate an air mattress. The sound happened when I was slowing down for a stop sign, and lasted about 4 or 5 seconds. Later this afternoon, about 10 seconds after I had parked and turned off the ignition, it did it again! I have NO CLUE what it is. Car runs fantastic, and it hasn't given me any trouble codes. Any ideas????????

You either have an A4 transmission (automatic), or a M6 (manual) You do not have an A6.
The sound you describe sounds like stripped headlight motor gears. Were your headlights moving up or down just before you heard this noise?

that's the sound and the affliction that would create such a sound. that's a good call Y2K

That's exactly what it is - I realized it about 15 minutes after I made this post and went out for dinner. After the headlight closes, it's as if the motor keeps going and some gears are stripping. Anybody had this happen before and know of an easy fix?
