Default 3 QUESTIONS HELP??? LONG

1. I just got my 99frc and i love the car but it seems like it has alot of wheelhop. Almost everytime i go to spin them there always seems to be wheelhop. The car does have new tires so i dont know if that has anything to do with it. Do you guys get this as well????

2. This car is my first 6 speed as well as my first manual for that matter. I was wonderind what is the correct way to downshift on the highway. When i put it in say third for example at 60mph it feels so jerky and almost like the wheels lock up for a split second. My bro has a really nice mustang gt that could do about mid 13s and when he downshifts it feels smooth just like my 99z28 a4 when it would kick down to a lower gear around 60mph.He can spin second gear in his car and i cant .I know that his car isnt faster than my car they are about the same but he is a much better driver. He said the way to spin second is not to get off the gas but isnt that bad for the clutch???

3. When i put the car in first to start moving i put the clutch to where i know it is about to catch then i give it a little gas like rev it up to about a 1000rpm or maybe a little over (the gas seems very touchy) after i give it a little gas i slowly back off the clutch then slowly giving it more gas and it grabs pretty smoothly. I did this when my friend was in the car and he said that what i was doing was bad for the car and that i am slipping the clutch and that is bad for the car.Can u guys pkease help me out with this i am getting frustrated and i feel like i am never gonna get it thankz guys

First and foremost, welcome to the forum and congrats on your purchase. I'm by no means an expert on the corvette, but I hope this helps.

This is pretty norrmal, the stock runcraps do have a whole lot of wheel hop. Swapping tires seems to be one of the best solutions.

Well, it sounds to me like you're letting the clutch out too fast. If you're downshifting, the motor is going from a lower rpm to a higher rpm, if you don't give them a chance to catch up with each other, the result will be a more violent downshift. You've got 2 options. First, use the brakes. Pads are a lot cheaper than a clutch. Second, just tap the gas a little bit to bring the rev's up.

This is the best way to burn up your clutch. The way I teach people how to drive a stick is to start in a parking lot. Sit on some level ground w/ the car in 1st and your foot only on the clutch. Let the clutch out until you feel it start to grab. From there, it's a matter of feeling to get down how much gas to give it when starting off. You'll get it, it just takes practice.

Hope I helped.

Wheel-hop...happens on all IRS (idependant rear suspension) manual vettes. Lowering helps a bit..but you still get it most of the time. About downshifting....say you are going 60, and downshift to 2nd, you have to be ON THE GAS as soon as you let off, dont let off the clutch and then hit the gas or you will lock up the wheels. About spinning them in second, take first to right before the limiter, put in the clutch press the gas down till it is still SLIGHTLY before the limiter, and drop the clutch in second, you will spin em pretty good that way. Remeber this all has to happen FAST. Its all about practice, being that its your first MN6 car you probably wont be able to pull moves like this comfortably for a while. About starting out...it sounds like you are doing it right. You want to make sure you starting moving by using the clutch as little as possible but still smoothly. As long as you're not smelling anything bad (burnt clutch) your probably ok.

Keep practicing, try to find an old road or secluded parking lot.

Have fun!

And when u said the same thing about spinning second u mean take first to near redline then press the clutch in put the car in second floor the gas then get off the clutch real quick ??? sorry to be such a pain in the butt but i wanna learn and i dont wanna mess up the car

You want your RPM's to be up before you release the clutch.

thegame,

Since this is your first Vette and first manual transmission , I'd like to give you some well meant advice.
Take it easy and learn how your Vette shifts first and how the car responds to throttle before trying to show-off in front of your friends.
Our Vettes have lots of torque and a manual trans. has no slip as compared to an automatic. You'll end in the ditch much faster than you'd believe or worse, you might kill yourself or other innocent people.
I've read many stories on this board from first time 6-speed drivers who killed their transmission, bent valves and pushrods , just because they did miss a shift.
Take your time, and drive carefully. This might take several months but will pay off bigtime.

Oh, not able to spin tires? Switch off active handling/traction control if equipped.

Off the soapbox now.
Roger
