Default Time for new clutch...

Ok, tell me what I need to know. I want a new clutch to support at least 420 rwhp. No chatter at all, not even a bit. Want a balanced kit with flywheel. And, whether you think any new flywheel in a kit ought to be balanced anyway.

Then, I don't want to ever have to worry about my pedal hitting the floor again, so what aftermarket items do I need? Who is that guy with the modified slave cylinder with larger passages (and a remote bleeder)? And is that all I need or is there more?

I also want to replace the TT bushings, but which ones are the best? And I'll need all the 'while you're at it' parts. I want to make this a one time job. I track very little and don't beat up on it too often, but when I go to the drags, I don't want to have any problems with missed shifts or smelly clutch burns.

Thanks for the help in advance, peeps!!

Look for my old thread it might still be on the first page if not the top of the second. Pretty much the same question.

Really it depends on how you drive I have at least 100-125 passes on my car that makes 430 rwhp and 12k miles and my ls7 clutch looked great when I took it out this winter!!! I know guys that burn up 1500.00 dollar clutches in 400-500 rwhp cars because of driving habits...

Another vote for the LS7 clutch setup. 420rwhp will be no problem and it will feel like stock.

I considered the ls7, but, went with the spec stage 2+. So far so good and I'll get it to the track for the first time this weekend. It does have a little chatter, but, I think that will go away once I get it hot at the track a few times. I hope so anyway.

I've been through many clutches in my 6 years of owning my C5. I wouldn't consider a LS7 clutch myself but what do i know . I would look at a CenterForce Dual Friction clutch. These are a great clutches I ran one for over a year on my Procharged setup and it held 500 rwhp with no problems. Now I'm running a Spec Twin with a Tick master on my 800 rwhp plus setup. Goodluck with which ever clutch you choose I've also changed my TT bushings I went with BMW bushing in the front and a LG solid rear bushing.

I just installed a monster stage 3 and so far so good does not have any chatter but it does grab quick. I previuosly had a spec stage 3 and it chattered pretty bad and the pedal pressure was harder than the monster. So this is my initial experience between the 2clutches. So I can't say much about the longevity of the clutch but definitely the drivability with the monster is better.

im in the same boat. in the past when i was just reading for fun i found all kinds of threads about clutches etc. ijust used the search for half an hour and got nowhere. i'll just follow your thread and hope i get the info i need. i went to the track today and smoked mine about the 3rd pass on a stock car with 12K miles... hoorah.

got plenty of friends with cars and they all have different opinions. ive had specs in the past.. but the vette from what i read is so darn touchy. plus, i'd like to just resurface my flywheel.

I've had major driveability issues w/ chatter from the clutch in my Z since I purchased it around 6 months or so ago. Just recently went ahead and had it replaced.

Turns out it was a Spec clutch in there. In fairness to Spec I don't know if it was installed and broken in correctly or how many miles were on it (only 50k on car when I got it, can't be that many on the Spec), and I didn't actually get any details on what stage it was, just that it was a Spec clutch. Anyway, it was the biggest piece of crap I've ever experienced as far as daily driveability is concerned. Major teeth jarring clutch chatter if I didn't let it out just perfectly and it took way more throttle to get any kind of smooth launch than I've run into before. Couldn't launch smoothly under 1300-1500 rpm for just normal driving, etc. It never slipped under throttle and may have stood up to 800 hp for all I know, it just sucked for a daily driver. Maybe much of it was just me too. Toward the end when I would manage to start off smoothly I was getting some squeak/squeal noises from the clutch too.

Anyway, I went with a LS7 kit w/ new slave/pilot bearing/remote bleeder, etc. So far it is just a dream come true after that piece of crap I've been saddled with since having the Z. Smooth as butter, much lighter clutch pedal, etc. May come to wish I went with something else down the line (still in the breakin period), but for now it is just a pleasure to drive again. I had the LS7 kit in my last car too (99 TA) for a couple years and never had any issues. For a stock like feel that should be able to hold up to pretty decent power it seems like a good bet IMO.

Ok, just wanted to update. Chatter has not gone away and maybe getting worse, having some shifting problems at high rpm. Can't seem to get the air out of the slave, you are right about the chatter and rpm levels. I bought this clutch from a friend who ended up selling his vet before it was installed, I wasn't aware it was a puck clutch until after installation. I wouldn't have gone that route and I think that has a lot to do with chattering. It grabs and holds like crazy and actually bogs the car with my drag radials if I don't get the R's up high enough before leaving. I haven't gotten it to the track yet because of the shifting issues. We'll get it straightened out and I think it will be ok, wish I would have went with the ls7, a friend of mine has a 04Z and he just put the ls7 in his and loves it. He does a lot of autocross and road racing with no issues.

I went with a Centerforce and have no regrets. 16,000 miles and still holding strong.

Great 1st hand info guys. Keep 'em coming! I'm leaning towards the LS7 at the moment. I hope this will help a lot of people with their decision.
