I was enjoying an onramp this morning and accidentally hit the rev limiter at the top of second. to my surprise the tach bounced off the rev limiter and the car bucked as a result. on my other car if you stay on the throttle up to 7k the engine speed just stops at that point, it doesn't bounce it just holds steady. intersting. so now I know why people sometimes like shift lights. the indicator on the HUD is nice but useless if the sun is out. I don't want a car with all kinds of functional but not good looking equipment. does anyone know if someone makes a shift light, LED based, but small, like a 1/4" - 1/2" circle that can be flush mounted to a panel. I'm thinking maybe I could mount something like that to my gauge pod in one of the small empty spaces next to one of the gauges. it would be aimed almost right at my face and make it easy to know when to shift.
how do you connect shift lights anyway? can it be tapped into the tach lead for the cluster or something or does it need to be run to one of the coils?
You need the Raptor shift light, and yes it taps into the very same wire that feeds your tach (but reacts quicker), and yes, it can and has been flush-mounted into a dual-pod A-pillar panel.

Awesome! I've seen those before. very nice. any pics of them installed?
looks too big to fit into the extra space on the pillar pod however. I'm not sure how I'd mount it and make it look subtle and mostly hidden. I try to make my interior mods look like they could have been stock.
I have a 3 gauge pillar pod which is full of 3 gauges...in the small blank areas I've already mounted one button so switch one gauge's mode and a small switch to turn the gauges off (for blackout mode at night time) and that's where I'd like to be able to mount it.
I'll look more on the web site, but what about a shift light that just has a 12V or 5V output or something and you can mount and wire in your own LED? I could probably fit a single 10MM led into that space and make a great shift light out of that.
looks like exactly what I was looking for. do you know off hand what color wire the tach lead is? I guess plenty of people have done this, it can be tapped safely for this purpose.
web site says to connect 12V to it, does it really want B+ or should it be switched power?
I was just thinking today how annoying it is to have to take your eyes off the road to know when to shift, then it just occurred to me...duh! so that's why people install shift lights. I never thought they made any sense before.

You want to have it to a switched battery source. There are not many things that go on a car that should go direct to battery other than maybe a Winch or Stereo Amp which are switched via a remote wire and not constantly putting a load on the battery. Even though what you are wiring is minute as far as amperage, a fused, switched circuit is neccessary to keep you elec. system safe as well as your accessory.
