Default 98 C5 first mods?

Hi all,
First I feel obligated to say I dont own a Corvette, I am asking questions on my brothers behalf. He owns a 98 C5 with 6 speed manual. It is completely stock, but that's about to change. i took him the my local 1/4 mile track (at California Speedway) and had him ride along with me in my Cobra. I think he caught the bug- big time!! All of a sudden it's what should I get first? and what do you think I'll run stock? he wants to know what to mod first, What would you all recommend in regards to the following and a rough guestimate on prices and even gains if you happen to know off hand;
Shifter (or is the stocker OK? My car really needed an aftermarket shifter)
what kind of aftermaket airfiltration system
Xpipe?
What are some decent headers for the vette?
Thanks guys and gals and lemme say that I dig the site and I hope you all dont mind having a non Vette owner around askin questions! Oh yeah what will the car run stock?

Some good mods to begin with:

B&M Ripper shifter
Vortex ram air
Breathless Ported MAF Ends with Airfoil

Good for 325 rwhp.......

Start with Air Intake or Exhaust System! Many choice's out there he has to decide which one he like's. Good Luck helping your brother spend his money.

I think I'm prolly gonna recommend the shifter first cuz we all know how the adrenaline flows when racing. I would hate for him to damage the shift forks while getting aggressive on the 1-2 shift. Then the Vortex rammer CA System. Fortunately, I estimated the price of some of the products you are recommending much higher than they actually are when we were at the track, so he'll be pleasantly surprised at the actual price. Please keep the suggestions comming! Thanks guys!

Alex

Shifter, intake and exhaust, although exhaust doesn't give much of anything.

For the 98, a Vortex intake, Remove the screen in the MAF,an LS6 intake manifold, cooler thermostat, Fan control regulator, adjustable fuel regulator, and an exhaust to make it sound as fast as it is!! There's loads more too, but this would be a good start. :yesnod: Be careful, you may have to send your brother to Modaholics Anonymous, if he gets out of control.

lots of good suggestions!

I would definately do an aftermarket air intake first! the vortex is popular and so is the blackwing. it all depends on if you want to cut a hole in the radiator shroud or not.

MAF ends or a ported MAF would be next.
LS6 intake would be cool if you have the mechanical ability.

Then a catback exhaust system to make it sound the way it should (Corsa Indys seem to be the most popular). like others have posted, the exhaust system won't get you much power gains.

hope this helps!

by the way,
his stock '98 is faster than your cobra! :p: :p: :p: :p: :p: :p: :p:

98's run rich, you should put in an adjustable fuel pressure regulator (only possible with 97s and 98s).

98's will lean out with Vortex like mine did, so a MAFT is necessary.

Cali Speedway, I know it well! Cold air intake should be his first mod!

#1 Vortex
#2 TIRES!!! Non-runflats will give better handling, better ride, better braking, better acceleration, and give a cheap and easy rear gear change. Best overall bang for the buck. :yesnod:

K&N Generation II Air Intake ($300 on the Forum) In my opinion, the best air filter combo out there. In addition, go with the ported MAF ($299). Both increased the dyno results by 10rwhp and 10+rwtp. :D

by the way,
his stock '98 is faster than your cobra!

yeah yeah yeah, I was waitng for that! Stock to stock I agree. but I'm not stock and I can compete (Read; not always beat but compete) with most stockers out there now it depends on the driver, definitly advantage Vette!
I'm plenty happy with my Cobra and he's really happy with his Vette.
So from what I'm reading the 98's run a bit rich and the Vortex should lean it out? would it lean out nicely or will I have to have him reflash his chip? He is not too mechanically enclined and I would hate to screw up his baby so what would be the install price (appx) of the Cold air kits? And which kit involves cutting the radiator shroud?

Thanks Again!

Alex
