Default Should I get Windshield Replaced?

Hi guys...

In reviewing my auto insurance policy and after talking to my agent, I discovered I have glass coverage. Not sure how I missed this before, but anyway, moving on:

I think after a month or two I'll put this to work for me. (I want to wait for the city to pick up the gravel / rocks from the roads first).

Reasons I want to replace the windshield:
1. I have 3 good-sized chips and a bazillion really tiny "sandblasting" marks
2. Top windshield molding is a little loose
3. Windshield has a film of window tint (really light, 85% I think) that I want off
4. Insurer has assured me that my premium will not be affected if I get a new windshield
5. Deductible is only $100

Reasons I don't want to replace the windshield:
1. I hear its very difficult to get an actual Z06 windshield out of a glass company
2. Worries about the quality of the install
3. Not sure I trust item 4 above.

What do you guys think? Any foolproof ways to verify that the windshield going in, is in fact a Z06 windshield? Anything else I should worry about?

Yes, I need one also. The only reason I haven’t is because I know immediately afterwards another rock will hit it. Maybe I should just throw a rock at it myself and get that first chip in a inconspicuous place!

Just do it!

I've replaced windshields on my other cars many times. A bad windshield is considered a safety hazzard and replaing it is encouraged by most insurance companies.

Here's how you do it.

1. Tell the insurance company that you want to choose the company.
2. Go to the dealership and tell them you want their glass guys to do the work and you want the real deal. If that works out, you're golden.
3. Bring the car to them and do a complete walk around the car, inside and out, note any damage, write it on the workorder and have the manager and yourself sign the statement. Tell them that you expect no damage whatsoever and that they will repair whatever they damage. Make sure they know that touch-up paint is not acceptible.
4. Drive away.

By this time they know you are serious and the glass guy will hawk over the installer and make sure it is done right. I have done this and had no issues. The car was clean, windshield perfect and the deductable was as advertised.

However, there is always a chance...

The original owner of my Z16 got a rock chip on the way home from the dealer after buying it new (in Metro Phoenix w/ about 5 miles on the odometer).

He pointed it out to me when I bought the car. It's not in my line of sight and hasn't increased in size in four years.

For all of the same reasons you've listed, I've chosen not to get the windshield replaced at this time even with full coverage glass replacement and no deductible. I believe that may vary from state to state. I may have it filled in before I have the windshield replaced.

There's been plenty of past threads with the GM part number for the thinner Z06 HUD glass. If you choose to do it, insure you get the correct equivalent replacement windshield.

The problem is you can't get the GM part number if you order the part from GM. I had the windshield done twice on my 03Z starting in 2008 and ending in 2009. The windshields were installed by two different glass companies. One ordered through their own resources and the other ordered through the local dealer. Neither one had the GM part number listed on the forum and neither one had the 4.8MM thickness in the description area. The dealer said all they can do is provide the windshield that GM ships them. They used the car's VIN to ensure they ordered the correct part. I was there when the guy ordered it and he let me watch the screen as he checked to see which one to order. I suspect that GM and the glass company have cut down on the windshield part numbers they inventory and the choices are limited to windshields with HUD and with antennas, windshields with HUDS and without antennas, and windshields with antennas and no HUD. This pretty much allows them to support all 3 versions of the C5 with the various options they came with.

The big problem with my replacement was the first installer tried to reuse the door trim and weatherstrip and on the second install the installer did both the windshield and the trim/weatherstrip. If you go that route make sure you keep the old blow out clips from the previous door trim. GM has stopped providing those clips. I didn't realize they were missing for a couple days and by that time the trash had been hauled away.

In another 4 years a fair number of those parts won't be available at all as they generally stop providing parts for car models that are over 10 years old.

Bill

I had mine replaced. I told the guy it had to say 4.8mm. It took the dealership a while to get the right glass, but it is available. Anybody in North Florida, I highly recommend Walker Auto glass.

I actuall had a rock really break mine at 38 k miles. The glass co just asked if I had HUD and they ordered one. Looks fine to me. We are not driving bloomington gold collectors items here. I guess claiming one after breaking it yourself would be fraud. I certainly wouldn't advertise doing it.
