There is no adjustment in the shifter area so check where the cable connects to the transmission. Did you or anyone else ever remove the shifter? If the shifter cable is tilted too much when removing the shifter the plastic cable housing can crack and then the shifts will be sloppy. If you remove the console and the 4 shifter retainer nuts the shifter can be slightly lifted off the 4 studs and checked for any slop by moving the whole assembly forward and backward, just don't lift the shifter too much or the fragile cable will break. To remove the shifter, a long screwdriver is needed to pop the cable end off the endbell without lifting the shifter more than the thickness of the screwdriver. If anyone breaks the cable there is a way to repair it without removal.
