High Oil Consumption - what does it do?
Couldn't really put the full text in the subject, but my question is this : My '99 (out of warranty, no extended warranty) burns 1 qt per 600 miles. Obviously this is high. Since I'd be looking at bearing the cost of this fix myself - are there any compelling reasons to get it fixed? What damage does this high oil consumption cause?
Well, you can expect to foul plugs more often, generate more carbon in the combustion chambers which will result in detonation, overheat the cats, and foul the oxygen sensors, to name a few things. Depending on the amount of blow-by that's getting through, you can also get fuel in the oil, reducing its ability to lubricate the engine, as well.
All told, oil burning won't kill your engine right away, but it reduces the life of a lot of components, and sometimes even the life of the engine itself.
