Does the C5R run coil overs???
Front Suspension
Short/long arm double wishbone; forged aluminum upper, cast aluminum lower control arms; fabricated steel knuckle; coil-over multi-adj. shocks; adj. anti-roll bar
Rear Suspension
Short/long arm double wishbone; steel fabricated upper, cast aluminum lower control arms; fabricated steel knuckle; coil-over multi-adj. shocks; adj. anti-roll bar
I've seen more and more people on the forum going to coilovers but the majority is using the stock leaf-springs. Most people using coilovers are into some kind of roadracing/autoXing.
This is a couple of threads recently dicsussing coilovers: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=214022 http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=220630 http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=216027 http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=204271

David Farmer of Speedvision fame and McClure both run C5s. David has the stock suspension (spring and shocks) and McClure runs a very expensive coil-over and a more powerful engine. David has consistently ran within half a second or faster. What can we infer? Well, I don't think coil overs help as much as you would think.
Dynos don't lie, but track racing is more than horsepower.
I do not think it says so much about coilovers, it says more about the driver quality :)
I agree with you that you would not get any big differences if using the same driver, same car and swap between leaf springs and coilovers using a very flat track. Under the same circumstances on a track with rough surfaces in the corners you would get a greater difference because the car with leafspring would sidestep in the corners making it impossible to have the same speed through and out of the corner such as a car with coilovers. And I think there is a reason why the C5R team is using coilovers .....
For us happy amateurs I think it adds some security because if the car would sidestep in a corner at high speed most of us would not be experienced enough to compensate and go off the track :)
My $0.02.
