:cry :cry :cry I just left my house 5 mins ago and 2-3 miles down the road I get coolant overtemp light come on, I look at my gauges and my freaking coolant temp is burried in the red zone    I pulled off in to a parking lot, turned the car off and turn the heater on full... for a while it seemed like it was blowing cold air, even later when the air got warmer it didn't seem to be very warm or should I say hot... I let her cool down to about 208 degrees and drive her back home in time when it got burried in the red zone again.. I had the heater turned on all the way... still didn't seem extremly hot air blowing out of the a/c... is the coolant reservoir tank supposed to get hot? becaues I touched it and it was not... I hope what I'm thinking is right that it's a stuck thermostat.. please please please tell me that's the problem  I have an aftermarket thermostat that I have been running in there for almost a year.. I still have my stock one in my garage... what do you guys think? what should I check for? could it possible be a blown head gasget? how would I know?
Ouch. You've got nothing to lose by trying the stock thermostat. Try that for sure before fearing the worst. If the bastard is stuck, it's like running with no coolant and obviously your engine will overheat.
Okay, I got up early this morning and took out the aftermarket thermostat (I got it from WCC) and put in the stock one back in, refilled the coolant and left the cap open and started the car... temp got up to 225 degrees and stayed there, the thermostat did not seem like it opened up because there was no watter in the rubber hose and it was cold.. there was also no water movement in the resevoir either... it looks like a bad water pump.. AAA is on it's way right now to tow my baby to the dealer :cry
If the engine was running around 255 degres for about 1 or 2 minutes could that hurt anything?
There is a special way to put in a thermostat so that there are no air pockets that will stop the water pump from working.....if your temp stayed at 225, it is most probable that your other stat was bad and you put the new one in incorrectly......temps of 255 won't do anything unless you are running for long periods of time.......
The temp at 225 should not hurt a thing. My Eldorado runs at 223 all the time. Cadillac said it is normal with the ETC. At 81,000 miles, it still runs great, and uses no oil. My 99 Corvette stays at about 190, but I have seen it as high as 225 while stuck in traffic.
